Front Seat Height Adjustment Binding

AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:

DISCOVERY Series II (LT) Up to XA218931
All XA9... series vehicles

SITUATION:

ELECTRIC FRONT SEAT HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT MECHANISM BINDS

Customers may experience front seats which do not work properly when attempting to change the height. This problem may be the result of ineffective lubrication on the raising mechanism which causes binding and possibly jamming at the end of travel.

RESOLUTION:

CLEAN AND LUBRICATE SEAT MECHANISM

In response to customer complaint for the above symptom, the front seat raising and lowering mechanism is to be inspected, and if not properly lubricated, thoroughly cleaned of all residual lubricant materials. After cleaning the mechanism, it is to be lubricated with the specified blue polyeurea PTFE lubricant as described in the procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

INSPECT FOR BLUE LUBRICANT

1. Inspect lead screws for blue colored lubricant.

2. If blue colored grease is present, lubricating the lead screw and clevis will not improve the situation. The fault is elsewhere.

LUBRICATE RISE-AND-FALL MECHANISM

1. If blue grease is not observed, refer to the Workshop Manual Section 78.10.43.99 and remove the affected front seat.

2. Place the seat on a clean work surface.

CAUTION:
When cleaning and lubricating the seat mechanism, seat cushions and upholstery must be protected from lubricants.

3. Wipe both lead screws and plastic/metal clevis assemblies completely clean of all grease residues using a clean shop cloth.

4. Lubricate each drive assembly with a 2cc (0.07 oz) bead of new blue lubricant (LRNR600D).

CAUTION:
Correct seat mounting bolt installation sequence and tightening procedures are extremely important to the correct operation of all seat functions.

5. Refer to TIB 76/03/99/NAS and install seat into vehicle following the procedures outlined.

6. Cycle the seat several times and verify seat operation through the full range of motion in the rise-and-fall mode.

7. Go to step 1 and lubricate the alternate side seat.
