Thermostatic Expansion Valve "Honk"

SITUATION:

"HONKING" NOISE HEARD FROM DASH AREA

Customers have heard a noise coming from the dashboard area while the A/C compressor is operating. This can happen during A/C or front Defroster operation. The noise is coming from a vibration generated in the Thermostatic Expansion Valve (TXV). The pintle in the valve vibrates under certain conditions.

RESOLUTION:

REPLACE TXV

*A new design TXV has been introduced as of VIN WA399279. Installation of the new specification valve will eliminate the noise on vehicles prior to the safe VIN.*

NOTE:
The repairs outlined in this TIB are to be performed to resolve customer complaint of the symptoms described.





PARTS INFORMATION

WARRANTY CLAIMS:

82.25.01 Time 0.55 hrs.
Replace TXV

82.30.02 Time 1.15 hrs.
Evacuate and Recharge System

FAULT CODE: K

Normal warranty policy and procedures apply

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

REPLACE TXV

CAUTION:
Normally the receiver/dryer (AWR1374) would be changed when replacing an A/C component. In the case of this repair the receiver/dryer should not be replaced if the following conditions are met:

^ The system is performing normally when it enters the shop.

^ The lines are capped when the system is opened.

^ The system is not open for more than 15 minutes.

NOTE:
To fully charge the A/C system 1250 gm (44 oz.) of refrigerant is required.

1. On vehicles prior to the safe VIN WA399279 verify the complaint and the source of the noise is the TXV.

2. Refer to the Workshop Manual, Section 82 Repair 82.25.01 and follow the procedure to replace the original TXV with the new style.
