There have been some reports of transfer gearboxes which have been unable to shift out of gear. This is due to the transfer gearbox shift lever bolt coming loose. A new procedure has been specified to fix this problem. Use the following procedure to replace the bolt.

The diagnostic steps and repair procedures detailed on the following pages were developed as an element of the Land Rover Way OPERATION PRIDE. This TIB provides a library location for PRIDE information within the Land Rover North America technical literature system.

ACTION REQUIRED
Upon customer complaint for the symptoms outlined, perform the specified repairs.

PROCEDURE
Perform the diagnostic procedures and repairs outlined below for the repair of transfer gearbox lever bolt.

REMOVAL

1. Obtain the radio code and disconnect the negative battery terminal.





2. Remove the transfer gear lever knob and boot (figure 1).

3. Remove the cigarette lighter.

4. Lift the automatic transmission gear selector bezel from front and remove.

5. Remove rubber mat

6. Remove the switch panel trim.

7. Remove four screws securing switch panel.





8. Pull switch panel out to access switch multi plugs and disconnect multiplugs (figure 2).

9. Remove switch panel assembly.





10. Open center console lid and remove screws holding console (figure 3).

11. Release the 2 clips holding the front of the console to bracket

12. Remove the hand brake boot from console.

13. Remove clip and clevis pin securing cable to hand brake lever.

14. Lift hand brake lever and move console slightly away from transmission tunnel.

15. Disconnect connector from cigarette lighter.

16. Lift console assembly over hand brake and gear levers and remove from vehicle.

17. Drill out rivets that retain secondary boot, and remove boot.





18. Loosen and remove operating lever pinch bolt (figure 4).

REPLACEMENT

NOTE: Do not reuse old bolt; replace it with a new one.

1. Apply Loctite(R) # 271 to new bolt.

2. Install new bolt on operating arm. Tighten to 9 Nm. (7 lbf. ft.).

3. Reinstall secondary boot and retaining rivets.

4. Install center console into position.

5. Connect cigarette lighter connector.

6. Lubricate and install hand brake cable clevis pin and install cable.

7. Install clevis pin clip.

8. Install hand brake lever boot.

9. Secure center console onto clips.

10. Install center console securing screws and close center console lid.

11. Position switch assembly and install switch multiplugs.

12. Install four screws to secure switch assembly.

13. Install switch assembly bezel.

14. Install rubber mat.

15. Install automatic transmission bezel.

16. Install transfer gearbox lever boot and screw on shift lever knob.

17. Install cigarette lighter.

18. Reconnect negative battery terminal and code the radio.

19. Test drive for proper transfer gearbox shift operation.
