DETAIL
The branch of the lower radiator hose leading to the coolant reservoir has, in some cases, been incorrectly routed. All 1996 Discovery vehicles must be inspected to verify that this hose branch is routed ahead of the lower oil cooler pipe. If the hose is not routed correctly, the following procedure should be used.
The diagnostic steps and repair procedures detailed were developed as an element of the Land Rover Way Operation PRIDE. This TIB provides a library location for PRIDE information within the Land Rover North America technical literature system.
ACTION REQUIRED
Inspect vehicle for the symptoms outlined, perform the specified repairs.

PROCEDURE
Perform the diagnostic procedures and repairs outlined.
Inspection
1. Raise hood and verify the branch of the lower radiator hose leading to the reservoir is routed in front of the lower oil cooler pipe (figure 1).
2. If routed properly, no action is necessary.
3. If routed behind the oil cooler pipe, check for damage.
^ If damaged, replace the lower hose.
^ If not damaged, reroute using the following technique.
Rerouting
1. Allow engine to cool.
2. Drain coolant into a suitable clean container.
3. Loosen hose damp and remove hose from reservoir.
4. Route hose in front of lower oil cooler pipe and reconnect hose to reservoir. Tighten hose clamp securely.
5. Refill reservoir, start engine and run at idle until thermostat opens.
6. Check for leaks and top up reservoir as needed.
Replacement
1. Allow engine to cool.
2. Drain coolant into suitable clean container.
3. Loosen clamps on water pump, radiator and coolant reservoir.
4. Remove hose and save clamps for reuse.
5. Install new hose on water pump, radiator and coolant reservoir spigots being careful to route reservoir hose properly.
6. Tighten clamps securely and refill cooling system.
7. Start engine and run at idle until thermostat opens.
8. Check for leaks and top up reservoir as needed.
