SUBJECT:
GEARSHIFT INDICATOR INSTALLATION & ALIGNMENT
The following procedures and checks should be carried out when replacing or aligning the gearshift indicator assembly. The areas covered are grouped into four general categories:
^ Shift Cable Adjustment
^ Inspection for Binding/Scuffing
^ Indicator Alignment
^ Console Alignment
IMPORTANT: Perform the checks in order until the problem is resolved.
Refer to the illustrations for locations of the part names used below.
SHIFT CABLE ADJUSTMENT
1. Prior to removal of the console trim plate and the indicator assembly, Check the shift cable adjustment as follows:
Squeeze and hold the shift handle release lever, then shift from park to neutral, while feeling the detent action from the transmission valve body in each gear. When neutral gear has been selected (judging by the position of the indicator graphic AND by counting the transmission detent stops), release the lever. Check that the shifter is centered and locked in the neutral position of the indexing gate by gently pushing forward and rearward on the shifter while watching the release lever. The lever should NOT drop further downward and the shifter should not move more than 2 to 3 mm in either direction.
2. Repeat the procedure, this time moving the shifter from neutral to park. The release lever should drop fully down and the shifter should lock positively in the park gate as soon as the transmission park detent is felt, without additional forward pressure on the shifter.
3. If the shifter/cable adjustment is not correct, adjust the cable as per the Workshop Manual section 44, page 32, and repeat steps 1 and 2 as a final check.
INSPECTION FOR BINDING/SCUFFING
1. Inspect the exposed (black) portion of the indicator graphic for evidence of binding or scuffing against the indicator bezel, in the same direction of travel as the shifter. If the graphic shows wear marks from rubbing, clearance between the indicator panel and the graphic may be achieved by installing shim washers, Part Number WA104001L, between the guide box and the indicator bezel mounting lugs. Use 1 or 2 washers per mounting lug as required.
2. Check that the four half-circle shaped notches in the trim panel are aligned with the three unused mounting flanges and the illumination bulb holders on the guide box. Incorrect installation of the guide box may also cause the indicator graphic to scuff and bind on the front edge of the console trim.
INDICATOR GRAPHIC ALIGNMENT/REPLACEMENT
The original indicator graphic should be used in Step 1, prior to replacement, except in cases where the pivot ball is loose or missing. In this situation begin with Step 3.
1. Note the position of the red bar on the indicator graphic in Park, Reverse, Neutral, "D" and "3". The indicated gear should be illuminated entirely by the red bar with no green visible.
2 Disassemble the shift handle, remove the console trim panel, the indicator guide box and indicator bezel from the trim panel. Note proper guide box orientation as outlined above under item 2, "INSPECTION FOR BINDING/SCUFFING".
3. Install the indicator graphic on the guide box with the red indicator bar offset toward the REAR of the vehicle, as viewed when installed (See illustration). Reassemble the guide box and bezel to the trim panel, routing the bulb wiring to the outside of the mounting lugs and between the indicator bezel and the trim panel.
4. Install the trim/indicator assembly on the console to check the indicator alignment. The shift handle should not be installed at this time.
5. Check the alignment in park, Reverse, Neutral, "D", and "3". Also check that the indicator graphic pivot-ball mount does not ride underneath the indicator bezel when in park. If the alignment is satisfactory, remove the trim panel, attach the illumination bulb wiring, refit the trim panel and assemble the shift handle, ensuring that two O-rings are placed over the gate release rod prior to installing the release lever and E-clip. No further adjustment is needed.
6. If the red indicator bar is not aligned in the five gears mentioned above, remove the trim panel/indicator assembly from the console, loosen the four shifter box mounting screws and adjust the shifter box in the direction needed. Re-check the alignment as in Step 5. NOTE: The shift box may need to be pulled upward slightly to free it from the sealant used around the floor opening.
CENTER CONSOLE POSITIONING
1. In rare cases, the above procedures may not provide adequate adjustment and the console assembly may need to be repositioned forward or rearward on the floor. This is done by loosening, but not removing, the two bolts and two screws securing the console to the floor, as illustrated in the Workshop Manual, Section 44, page 30. Hold the console in the desired position and retighten the bolts and screws. Re-check the indicator alignment as outlined above in Step 5, "INDICATOR GRAPHIC ALIGNMENT".
