SUBJECT:
Upper Tailgate - Range Rover
From 1992 Range Rover VIN NA618695 process changes to centralize the upper tailgate in the body have reduced complaints of poor latching and/or popping open on one side. From 1993 Range Rover VIN PA625903 tolerance improvements to the hinges have been made to further reduce hatch close problems.
On older vehicles use the following procedures to address customer complaints:
WORK PROCEDURE
1. Close the upper tailgate.
2. Pull the tailgate hard to the right, then open and re-close.
3. Check that the latch fully engages the left hand striker.
4. Repeat steps 1-3 but this time pull the tailgate hard left and check the right hand striker.
5. If either latch does not fully engage it's striker, space out the striker(s) from the body frame using washers or in extreme cases an additional striker plate shim (see parts information below).
6. Re-check using steps 1-4 until fit is correct.
7. Torque striker plate to 5 ft.lbs. (7 Nm).
