Base Idle Speed - Setting Procedure

Bulletin # P89-003

Section: PRODUCT

Dated: 2/07/89

Subject:
BASE IDLE SETTING PROCEDURE - 1989 MODEL

To: ALL RANGE ROVER DEALERS

Changes to the EFI System on the 1989 Models simplifies the setting procedure for base idle. Base idle should only be set after the preliminary checks outlined in Service Bulletin # 87-033 (Product) have been carried out (other than Step 2 - potentiometer adjustment).

With the engine at operating temperature and an accurate tachometer connected:

1. Center punch and drill (1/8" bit) the tamper proof plug located on the throttle housing. Remove the plug with a sheet metal screw and pliers. Discard the plug and clean up any metal chips.

2. Start the engine and allow to idle.

3. Disconnect the stepper motor plug.

4. pinch off the large air bypass hose connected to the stepper motor housing (at rear of plenum) with smooth jawed locking pliers or equivalent.

5. Adjust the base idle with a 3/16" hex wrench to:

550 - 600 rpm - engines with less than 1,000 miles
600 - 650 rpm - engines with greater than 1,000 miles

6. Reconnect the stepper plug and remove the locking pliers and tachometer.

7. Install a new tamper proof plug, Part No. ETC6874, and road test the vehicle.
