Engine MIL Illuminated with DTC P0411 Stored

CONDITION SUMMARY:

Situation:

The engine Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) may be illuminated with Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0411 stored in the Engine Control Module and no restricted performance experienced. The DTC is able to be cleared, but no root cause is likely to be identified. This may be caused by engine management diagnostic false detection of Secondary Air Injection (SAI) performance.

Action:

In the event of a customer concern of the above, refer to the Repair Procedure outlined below to reconfigure the ECM.

DDW requires the use of causal part numbers. Labor only claims must show the causal part number with a quantity of zero.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

RECONFIGURE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE SOFTWARE

CAUTION:
Ensure all ignition 'ON' / ignition 'OFF' requests are carried out; failure to perform these steps may cause damage to control modules in the vehicle.

CAUTION:
A Midtronics PSC-550 Vehicle Power Supply must be connected to the vehicle battery during diagnosis.

NOTE:
When performing module software updates, if IDS displays 'no update required', select 'tick', then select 'X' in the pop-up window to abort the routine. Diagnose as necessary as a separate claim.

1. Connect the Midtronics PSC-550 power supply to the vehicle battery.

NOTE:
IDS must be loaded with software release DVD 118.5 with Patch File 19 or later and latest calibration files.

2. Connect the IDS to the vehicle and begin a new diagnostic session by entering the correct VIN for the current vehicle.

3. Follow the IDS prompts to read the vehicle configuration.

4. When prompted 'Do you wish to read diagnostic trouble codes?' select 'No'.

5. Select 'tick' to continue.

6. When Content Model is displayed, select the 'Vehicle Configuration' tab.

7. From the Vehicle Configuration menu, configure the ECM by selecting: 'Module programming' > 'Configure existing module' > 'Powertrain control module'.

8. Follow all on-screen instructions until IDS displays the current and proposed software levels.

^ If 'Software update required' is displayed, select 'tick' to reconfigure the ECM, following all on-screen instructions to complete this task.

^ If 'No update required' is displayed select 'tick', then select 'X' in the pop-up window to abort the routine; exit the current session. Diagnose as necessary as a separate claim.

9. When completed, IDS will return to the Vehicle Configuration menu.

10. Exit the current session.

11. Disconnect IDS and the Midtronics PSC-550 Vehicle Power Supply from the vehicle.
