Engine MIL Illumination with DTC P0411 / P0491 / P0492 Stored - Diagnostic Procedure

AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:
XJ (X350) 4.2L Naturally Aspirated Only VIN: G49701 - H24779
Model Year: 2006 - 2008

CONDITION SUMMARY:

Situation:

The engine Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) may be illuminated with Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0491 or P0492 stored. If the Engine Control Module (ECM) has been reconfigured to the latest calibration level, DTC P0411 may be set. These DTC's may be caused by a leak in the Secondary Air Injection (SAI) system.

Action:

In the event of a customer concern of the above, follow the Diagnostic Procedure outlined below to inspect the SAI system for leaks.

DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE

VEHICLES WITH DTC P0491 OR P0492 STORED

1. Verify SAI pump operation / output.

2. Inspect all SAI system flexible rubber hose connections at the:

^ Air Injection control valve

^ 'Swan neck' connection at the left-hand side of the engine compartment

^ SAI pump (removal of the undertray necessary)

^ Hoses at the 'T'-piece to SAI pressure sensor (removal of the undertray necessary)

3. Inspect all SAI stainless pipe connections at the:

^ Air Injection control valve

^ Exhaust manifold unions

VEHICLES WITH DTC P0411 STORED

1. If DTC 'P0411 - Low air flow being delivered' is stored:

^ Verify SAI pump operation / output

^ Inspect SAI valve / solenoid hardware

2. If DTC 'P0411 - Incorrect flow upstream (from SAI pump)' is stored:

^ Verify SAI pump operation / output

ALL VEHICLES
