Issue:

Some 2004 MY-ON XJ range vehicles may exhibit a condition where the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is lit with Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0128 (thermostat range/performance faults) stored in the Engine Control Module (ECM).

Action:

In case of a verified customer complaint of the above condition, the ECM should be reconfigured using the Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) with software release JTP 759/31 or later. Should a customer express concern, follow the workshop procedure outlined below.

WORKSHOP PROCEDURE

1. Ensure coolant system level is correct and there are no leaks.

Note:
Any coolant leak repairs are to be carried out as a separate Warranty Claim.

2. Position WDS alongside vehicle, switch Portable Test Unit (PTU) "ON" and allow software to load.

Note:
Ensure WDS is loaded with software release JTP 759/31 or later.

3. Connect PTU to vehicle using diagnostic cable.

4. Enter VIN and navigate to the DTC monitor.

5. Ensure the ECM and Transmission Control Module (TCM) are free of DTCs.

Note:
Carry out any associated diagnostic routines and clear any DTCs. Any repairs are to be carried out as a separate Warranty Claim.

6. Navigate to "Configuration Main Menu".

7. Select and run "re-configure existing ECM" application.

8. After re-configuration of ECM is complete, switch "OFF" PTU, disconnect from vehicle and return WDS to original location.

Warranty claims should be submitted quoting the information found in the table.

This will result in payment of the stated time and, where applicable parts/miscellaneous expense codes as listed.
