Timing Components: Service and Repair
Removal
1. Remove the engine front cover.
2. Install the crankshaft pulley bolt and washer.
CAUTION: Remove the spark plugs to enable the engine to rotate freely. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise until the colored timing chains align with the marks on the camshaft sprockets and crankshaft sprocket, to position the engine to Top Dead Center (TDC) No. 1 cylinder prior to the removal and installation of the camshafts.
Do not rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise. The timing chains may bind causing engine damage.
3. Remove the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor pulse wheel. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt and washer.
4. Make sure the crankshaft sprocket marks align with the timing chain colored link.
5. Remove the RH chain tensioner.
6. Remove the RH chain tensioner arm.
7. Remove the RH timing chain.
8. Remove the RH timing chain guide.
9. Remove the LH chain tensioner.
10. Remove the LH chain tensioner arm.
11. Remove the LH timing chain.
12. Remove the LH timing chain guide.
13. Remove the crankshaft sprocket.
Installation
1. Install the crankshaft sprocket.
2. Install the LH timing chain guide.
3. CAUTION: Make sure the colored timing chain links align with the marks on the camshaft sprockets and the crankshaft sprocket.
Install the LH timing chain.
4. Install the LH chain tensioner arm.
5. Position the LH timing chain tensioner in a vise with jaw protectors.
6. CAUTION: During tensioner compression, do not release ratchet stem until tensioner piston is fully bottomed in its bore or damage to the ratchet stem will result.
Hold the LH timing chain tensioner ratchet lock mechanism away from the ratchet stem with a small pick.
7. NOTE: Piston should retract with minimal force. If binding occurs, reposition the tensioner to eliminate side loading.
Slowly compress the LH timing chain tensioner.
8. NOTE: Wire must remain in the timing chain tensioner until the tensioner is installed onto the engine with the piston bottomed in the bore.
Retain the tensioner piston using a suitable tool.
9. Install the LH chain tensioner.
Release the tension in the tensioner.
10. Install the RH timing chain guide.
11. CAUTION: Make sure the colored timing chain links align with the marks on the camshaft sprockets and the crankshaft sprocket.
Install the RH timing chain.
12. Install the RH chain tensioner arm.
13. Position the RH timing chain tensioner in a vise with jaw protectors.
14. CAUTION: During tensioner compression, do not release ratchet stem until tensioner piston is fully bottomed in its bore or damage to the ratchet stem will result.
Hold the RH timing chain tensioner ratchet lock mechanism away from the ratchet stem with a small pick.
15. NOTE: Piston should retract with minimal force. If binding occurs, reposition the tensioner to eliminate side loading.
Slowly compress the RH timing chain tensioner.
16. NOTE: Wire must remain in the timing chain tensioner until the tensioner is installed onto the engine with the piston bottomed in the bore.
Retain the tensioner piston using a suitable tool.
17. Install the RH chain tensioner.
Release the tension in the tensioner.
18. Install the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor pulse wheel.
20. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt and washer.
21. Install the engine front cover.
