Oil Seal/Pinion Flange Assembly








Special Service tools

Removal





1. Disconnect the battery ground lead
2. Raise the vehicle for access





3. Disconnect the main parking brake cable at the compensator





4. Disconnect the driveshaft from the differential flange

CAUTION: Under no circumstances must the flexible coupling (or its fixings) be loosened or removed from the drive shaft

'Match mark' the FLEXIBLE COUPLING to the differential DRIVE FLANGE
Remove the fixings (3)





5. Remove the fixings (2) center bearing to mounting bracket & push the drive shaft rear section forward to disengage from the pinion spigot
6. Support the driveshaft, do not allow it to hang





7. Remove the drive flange pinion nut
Using a suitable tool, relieve the staked portion from the pinion keyway
Remove the pinion nut using a suitable socket & tool 205-053 to resist rotation





8. Remove the drive flange assembly
Use tool JD 156 (puller) to remove the drive flange/seal assembly
9. Clean the seal counterbore

Installation
1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, noting the following;
2. Lightly lubricate the seal O/D





3. Check for the correct assembly condition
Ensure that the seal, Ryton ring & backing are aligned & in contact with each other

4. NOTE: Correct pinion seal location is automatic

'Pull' the pinion flange/seal assembly down with the pinion nut - do not hammer the flange





5. Refer to the illustration
Rotate the pinion prior to final tightening
Stake the nut to the pinion





6. Check the pinion drive flange axial run-out
0.08 mm MAX TIR
If this specification is exceeded, renew the flange/seal assembly





7. Check that the pinion spigot radial run-out
0.08 mm MAX TIR
If this specification is exceeded, contact Jaguar Service





8. Refer to the illustration
Renew the driveshaft fixings





9. Refer to the illustration
Ensure that the bearing is central
10. Correct the final drive oil level as required
11. Adjust the parking brake cable as required
