Rear Cross-Member: Service and Repair



Removal

CAUTION: Replacement of nuts and bolts: Various thread-locking devices are used on nuts and bolts throughout the vehicle. These devices restrict the number of times a nut or bolt can be used.

1. Raise vehicle on a four-post lift.





2. Remove subframe to differential-casing rear bracket bolts.





3. Where fitted, remove bolts securing fuel vapor pipe to subframe.





4. Remove subframe to differential bracket front nuts and bolts.





5. Support the differential assembly.
Position a jack under the differential drive coupling.
Position a piece of wood between the jack and the differential drive coupling.
Raise the jack until the differential is just supported.





6. Remove both mounting brackets from the suspension subframe.
Remove bush center bolt from bracket.
Remove bolts securing bracket to body.
Remove bracket.
Following the same procedure, remove bracket on opposite side.
7. To permit access, lower jack approximately 25 mm.





8. Remove and retain spacer from top of each bush.





9. Remove bolts securing link assemblies to suspension subframe.
Remove bolt.
Ensure spacer remains captive in bracket.
Following the same procedure, remove bolt from opposite side of subframe.





10. With assistance to support subframe, remove the subframe center to differential casing bolts.
11. Remove subframe from vehicle.
12. Clean relevant components and mating faces.

Installation





1. With assistance fit suspension subframe to vehicle.
Position subframe on vehicle, ensuring that fuel evaporation pipe is not trapped.
Install but do not tighten subframe center to differential casing bolts.





2. Install link assemblies to suspension subframe bolts.
Ensure spacer is in position.
Install but do not tighten bolt.
Following the same procedure, install bolt on opposite side of subframe.





3. Install but do not tighten subframe front to differential bracket nuts and bolts





4. Install and tighten subframe to differential rear bracket bolts to 88 - 118 Nm.





5. Tighten link assembly bolts to 88 - 118 Nm.





6. Tighten subframe front to differential bracket nuts and bolts to 69 - 92 Nm.





7. Where fitted, install fuel vapor pipe to subframe bolts.





8. Tighten subframe center to differential casing bolts to 88 - 118 Nm.





9. Position spacer in the recess of each subframe bush.





10. Raise jack to locate subframe bushes on the body tapered locations.

11. CAUTION: When installing subframe bracket ensure that wheel speed sensor harness is clear.





Fit suspension subframe mounting-brackets.
Position bracket to subframe.
Install but do not tighten bush center bolt.
Install but do not tighten bolts securing bracket to body.
Following same procedure, install mounting bracket on opposite side.





12. Tighten mounting bracket to body bolts to 80 - 100 Nm.
Following same procedure, tighten mounting bracket bolts on opposite side.





13. Tighten mounting bracket bush center bolt to 80 - 100 Nm.
Following same procedure, tighten mounting bracket bush center bolt on opposite side.
14. Lower and remove jack.
15. Lower four-post lift.
