Poor Start - Fuel Line Knocking Noise - Repair Procedure

Issue:
Some 1998 MY V8 XJ Series vehicles, within the above VIN range, may experience a knocking sound from the fuel line, or excessive cranking being required to restart the engine. The possible cause may be that the vacuum hose from the fuel pressure regulator to the throttle body unit is kinked or restricted due to pressure from a wiring harness.

Action:
If case of a customer complaint of fuel link knock on vehicles within the above VIN range, check for a kinked vacuum hose at the rear of 'A' cylinder bank (right side). Below and outboard of the throttle body there is a support bracket that holds clips 'A' and 'C' (Illustration 1), which locate the fuel injection and starter motor harnesses. Ensure that the vacuum hose is routed through this area in a way that it can not be kinked or restricted where it passes under the harnesses but above this bracket.

Before VIN 851000, the location of harness clips 'A' and 'C' was the opposite of the layout in Illustration 1. In case this concern occurs, swap the location of these two clips to the layout for later vehicles, as shown in Illustration 1. This will provide a greater clearance between harnesses and bracket where the fuel pressure regulator hose passes between harness and bracket at 'B'.
