Engine Block Heater - Install Power Cord -
Service Action S686 -
Canadian Market Vehicles Only

Issue:
A number of 1998 Model Year V8 XJ Series within the above VIN range have been shipped to the Canadian market without the power cord which should have been installed between the air intake grille and the block heater.

To rectify this condition, Jaguar Cars will supply directly to Jaguar Canada the necessary power cords, on a free-of-charge basis.

Action:
Make the necessary arrangements for these power cords to be installed on 1998 Model Year V8 XJ Series within the above VIN range.

Where possible this action should be performed while the vehicle is undergoing PDI. In the case of vehicles already in service, the action should be undertaken in the event of any Customer concern, or at the first service opportunity.

INSTALLING BLOCK HEATER POWER CORD

1. Align the vehicle to a 2-post hoist and loosen the nuts of the left front wheel.

2. Partly raise the hoist and remove the wheel.

3. Remove the front portion of the wheel well liner.

4. Raise the hoist to a convenient height for access to the cylinder block heater unit, on the outer face of the left hand cylinder block.

5. Connect the power cord to the block heater, then route the cord downwards and towards the front of the vehicle, as shown in Illustration 1.

6. Pass the power cord forwards and downwards, over the suspension crossmember, so that it can be attached to the power steering feed hose, at the ferrule, using a tie strap as in Illustration 2. Trim off any excess length of tie strap.

7. Route the power cord forwards, upwards and outwards, until it can be positioned between and outboard of the two hoses connecting to the gearbox oil cooler. An additional tie strap should be installed at this point, as in Illustration 3. Trim off any excess length of tie strap.

8. Route the power cord forwards, towards the air intake aperture in the bumper cover, passing outboard of the radiator support bracket.

9. Insert the fir-tree fastener into the existing hole on the underside of the radiator bracket, as in Illustration 4.

10. On naturally aspirated vehicles, route the power cord forward until it can be positioned to the front of the air intake aperture, below the splitter vane, as in Illustration 5. Attach another tie strap to retain the power connector. Any excess length of power cord should remain supported on the left hand side of the bumper cover.

11. On supercharged vehicles, following step 9 above, ensure that the power cord is routed behind and then over the additional cooler support bracket (as shown in Illustration 6 - viewed through the air intake opening) before completion as in step 10 above.

12. On all vehicles, reinstall the wheel well liner and wheel.

13. Lower the hoist, then fully tighten the wheel lug nuts.
