Jump Starting - Alternate
Jumper Cable Connection

ISSUE:

In Section 4, Roadside Emergency Service, the Vehicle Care Handbook describes a jump starting procedure for starting a vehicle disabled by a discharged battery. This procedure involves connecting the negative cable from the booster battery to the striker of the luggage compartment lock on the disabled vehicle.

On a number of vehicles within the above VIN range, a plastic-coated lock striker was installed, which prevents the procedure from being followed as originally described.

ACTION:

On vehicles equipped with the plastic-coated lock striker, connect the negative jumper cable to the hold-down clamp of the spare wheel.

CAUTION:
DO NOT CONNECT THE NEGATIVE CABLE DIRECTLY TO THE NEGATIVE TERMINAL OF THE DISCHARGED BATTERY AS THIS CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM.

The above information should be brought to the attention of the owner of any vehicle equipped with a plastic-coated lock striker.
