Hood Panel Vibration -
Modification Instructions

MODEL
Sedan Range 1995 MY
VIN 720001 - 747309

DATE: 7/95

ISSUE:

The hood panel may vibrate on Sedan Range vehicles within the VIN range listed above when driving at high speed or over bumpy surfaces.

ACTION:

Modify the hood hinge mounting area as described in the following procedure. In addition, inspect the bonding of the hood panel to the inner reinforcement panel. If the bonding is found to be incomplete, perform the bonding procedure.

HINGE REINFORCEMENT PROCEDURE

1. Open the hood and cover the fenders with protective covers.

2. Disengage the gas struts from the hood. Carefully open the hood to the vertical position. Support the hood in this position until the procedure is completed.

3. Locate the areas to be modified on both the left and right sides above the hood hinges, Illustration 1.

4. Illustration 2 shows the left side of the hood hinge platform panel. Cut out the template provided. Cut out all the holes except new hole C.

5. Align the template over the existing holes and bolt heads. Use a center punch to mark the center of the new hole "C" where the lines intersect.

6. Once the new hole center has been marked at the left side, flip the template over and mark the right side as a mirror image of the left side.

7. After drilling a pilot hole, drill to the final dimension of 23/64 inch (9 mm).

8. Clean the edges of the drilled holes. Apply a zinc primer paint to the exposed metal to protect it.

9. Remove the radiator grille inserts and install the bolt, washers, spacer, and nut as shown in Illustration 3 (viewed from below, through the grille opening).

10. Tighten the bolts and nuts to 13 - 17 lb ft (17 - 23 Nm).

11. Paint the bolts with the vehicle body color touch-up paint.

12. Repeat the operation on the right side of vehicle.

13. Reinstall the radiator grille inserts.

14. Engage the hood gas struts.

BONDING HOOD PANEL TO REINFORCEMENT

1. In all cases of hood panel vibration, the integrity of the entire panel to the reinforcement panel bond must be ensured.

2. Inspect all around the existing bond by inserting a feeler gauge or thin cardboard between the panels to check for any gaps in the bond.

3. Any gaps should be completely filled with a metal to metal adhesive. Metal to metal adhesives supplied by Teroson, Kent Industries, or 3M that can be obtained locally, are suitable for this purpose.

4. To ensure a quality bond, the use of an applicator gun for all areas is recommended. Use an extension tube attached to the applicator gun for areas with difficult access.
