Breather System - Modification
17-3Blue Smoke for Exhaust - Oil Entering Inlet
Manifold on Deceleration - Breather
System Modification
MODEL: 94 MY Sedans DATE: 4/94
ISSUE:
Blue smoke from exhaust when accelerating with engine at normal operating temperature.
ACTION:
If the above condition exists, the following repair should be performed on a customer complaint basis ONLY.
1. Disconnect the battery and fit fender covers. Note radio codes and pre-set stations.
2. On XJS vehicles, remove both air cleaner assemblies. On XJ12 vehicles, release the clip retaining each convoluted intake hose to the air cleaner. Remove the bolt which secures each intake elbow to the throttle bodies, allowing the intake elbows to be moved aside.
3. Remove the full load breather pipe and the engine top cover.
4. Remove BOTH throttle bodies from their respective induction manifolds. Clean off any residual engine oil from within the induction manifolds before refitting the throttle bodies, using new gaskets.
5. Install the revised full load breather pipe assembly (NMC 3915AA for XJ12, NHC 3915AA for 6.OL XJS) to the original position.
6. For access:
- Disconnect L/H air temperature sensor multiplug.
- Disconnect vacuum pipe, supplementary air valve to throttle body.
- Disconnect throttle rods.
- Disconnect flywheel sensor multi-plug.
- Disconnect cruise control link rod from throttle pedestal.
- Disconnect throttle potentiometer multi-plug.
- Remove bolts, allowing throttle pedestal to be moved aside.
7. Unclip and remove the part load breather elbows (Fig. 1 A & B) from the oil separator stub pipes. Unclip and remove the part load breather elbows (Fig. 2 C). from the induction manifolds and remove both breather pipe assemblies. Retain the four clips which will be used later.
8. Release the clips and separate the part load breather elbows from the part load breather pipes. Discard the pipes but retain the four clips and two of the four elbows (two elbows can be discarded).
9. Assemble the purge hose (NHE 6068BA/4), Fig. 1 D, to the appropriate leg of the "T" piece (NAB 3953AA), Fig. 1 C, securing the hose with a clip (JHC 300120).
10. Assemble the two purge hoses (NHE 6068BA/5) to the side leg of the "T" piece (Fig. 1 A & B). Use a clip (JHC 300120) to retain each hose. Place the assembly aside.
11. Assemble one elbow (EBC 8213), Fig. 2 C, previously removed in step 7, to the appropriate end of each part load breather pipe (NAB 3955AA - L/H side, NAB 3954AA - R/H side). Fit a retaining clip (JHC 300120), previously removed in steps 6 and 7, at each joint. Fit the appropriate breather pipe/elbow assemblies to their respective inlet manifold stub pipes, fitting retaining clips at each stub pipe joint (Fig. 2 D). Refit the clips and nuts retaining the breather pipes to the inlet manifolds.
12. Slide a clip on to the upper end of each part load breather pipe. (The clips remain loose until later). Install the "T" piece unit (previously sub-assembled in step 10) to the front stub pipe of the oil separator (Fig. 1 F), simultaneously engaging the part load breather pipes into the purge hoses, forming the side legs of the "T". Position the loose clips in their correct locations (Fig. 1 E). Position the clip (Fig. 1 D) to retain the "T" to the oil separator stub.
13. Fit a cap (EBC 8004/1) to the rear of the stub pipe of the oil separator and fit a retaining clip (JHC 300120).
14. Refit and/or reconnect all components that were removed for access, as listed in step 6.
15. Remove the fender covers, reconnect the battery and re-code the radio.
