Throttle Linkage -- Check and Adjust
Because all throttle linkage parts are dependent on each other for proper operation, it is recommended that the adjustment procedure be carried out in its entirety, on a warm engine.
Carefully check linkage movement. When throttle bellcrank is moved, butterfly linkage at each throttle body should begin movement precisely as bellcrank begins movement. If there is a delay in butterfly linkage movement or linkage rods are holding butterflies open, proceed with adjustment procedure.
Throttle Linkage:
1. Remove both air cleaner assemblies.
2. Disconnect ball socket locks on throttle rods and remove rods.
NOTE: Carefully inspect operation of butterflies, throttle return springs and linkage bushings. Bushings are located at rear of butterfly linkage and it is common for them to be broken. Replace if needed, before continuing.
Throttle Plate Adjust:
3. Loosen lock nut on throttle butterfly stop screw and turn screw inward.
4. Place .002 feeler gauge as shown, and press butterfly lightly against feeler gauge.
5. Adjust stop screw to just touch butterfly stop arm and tighten lock nut.
6. Recheck clearence.
7. Perform this procedure on both throttle butterflies.
8. Check throttle bellcrank. Be sure it touches stop when released. If it will not reach stop, cable may need adjustment.
9. Refit linkage rods and loosen lock nuts (4) at each end of rod.
10. Turning center rod will cause it to change length. Watch throttle butterfly stop arm for movement at throttle body stop screws. When movement occurs, turn rod slightly in opposite direction just enough to eliminate movement at stop screw.
11. Carefully tighten lock nuts on rods and recheck adjustment. Be sure linkage ball joints are free rods are not holding throttle butterflies open when throttle is released.
NOTE: Proper adjustment is achieved when both throttle butterfly stop arms move off stop screws at the same time as bellcrank is turned slightly. There should not be any freeplay between bellcrank movement and throttle butterfly stop arm movement.
12. Open throttle fully. Be sure butterfly stop arms contact throttle body housings.
13. Check operation of idle switch. Adjust if needed.
14. Refit air cleaner assemblies.
15. Check idle speed and adjust if needed.
