Fuel Injector - On Vehicle Flow Test

84jaguar01

Date.... MAY, 1984
ITEM: J84/20

SUBJECT: "ON VEHICLE" FUEL INJECTOR FLOW TEST "P" SYSTEM ONLY

MODEL: XJ-S HE

EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:-

Lucas Epitest Unit

Stopwatch

250M1 Minimum Unbreakable Fuel Resistant

Graduated Cylinder Container with 2ml Divisions

Soft Clear Plastic Tubing 5/16" ID, 7/16" OD

PRECAUTIONS:-

To avoid misleading results, other fueling system components e.g. fuel pump, pressure regulator etc., should be confirmed as satisfactory before this test is carried out.

TAKE PRECAUTIONS AGAINST FIRE.

TEST METHOD:-

1. Depressurize fuel system.

2. Remove both air cleaner covers and elements.

3. Disconnect inlet manifold balance pipe and manifold vacuum cross pipe.

4. Disconnect throttle cable from throttle Pedestal and throttle rods from engine.

5. Electrically disconnect all injectors by removing plug connectors.
6. Remove all injectors from the manifold but do not remove from the fuel rail.

CAUTION: Ensure that the injector sealing rings are not misplaced and are correctly refitted when replacing injector.

7. Disconnect hose from fuel pressure regulator to fuel cooler and undo and remove fuel pressure regulator from mounting bracket.

8. Reconnect fuel pressure regulator.

9. Connect Epitest to the ECU harness plug and switch on ignition.

10. As per test 12, page 20, of the Lucas Epitest Operating Instructions (P. Pressure Sensing System) set Epitest switch positions as follows: A=12. B=5.C-1 Pol=+ve.

11. Locate graduated cylinder to stand alongside the engine and ensure that it is:

a) upright

b) will not topple over easily or fall

c) the top is below the level of the injectors

12. Keeping pipe runs as straight as possible, choose suitable lengths of plastic tubing to run from injector nozzles to graduated cylinder.

13. Pressurize the fuel system using the pump switch and ensure the system is purged of air.

14. Electrically connect injector No. 1A (injectors numbered 1 to 6 on each bank from the front of the engine. "A" bank righthand side, "B" bank lefthand side). Connect plastic tubing to No. 1A injector nozzle and feed into the graduated cylinder keeping the pipe run as straight as possible and below the level of the injector.

a) Press and hold pump switch on Epitest to generate working pressure.

b) Press Epitest "Injector 3" switch and hold for exactly one minute.

c) Release both switches.

d) Remove tubing from injector and empty any residual fuel from tubing into measuring cylinder.

e) Remove measuring cylinder, stand on a level surface and record volume contained. Return fuel to the fuel tank.

f) Repeat Test 14 to confirm result.

g) Electrically disconnect injector under test.

15. Ensure ONLY the injector under test is connected electrically. Repeat Test 14 for all injectors as follows:

Injectors 1A, 3A, & 5A - Press Epitest "Injector 3" switch.

Injectors 2A, 4A, & 6A - Press Epitest "Injector 1" switch.

Injectors 1B, 3B, & 5B - Press Epitest "Injector 2" switch.

Injectors 2B, 4B, & 6B - Press Epitest "Injector 4" switch.

RESULTS:-

Injectors are satisfactory if the flow rate in one minute exceeds the following:

"P" System EFI 170 ml

Repair operation applicable:

19.60.30 Injector Flow Test 2.65 hrs.
