STYLUS (JS) REAR SPOILER CREAKING NOISE

1991 Stylus (JS) XS models.

SERVICE INFORMATION

A creaking noise coming from the trunk area may occur when closing the trunk lid, due to improper cushioning between the rear spoiler and the trunk lid. Installing new, improved tape and gaskets (listed in the "Parts Information" section of this Service Bulletin) between the spoiler and the trunk lid will eliminate the noise.

This Service Bulletin contains procedures for installing new, improved tape and gaskets between the rear spoiler and the trunk lid to eliminate the noise.


SERVICE PROCEDURE

Refer to Figure 1 and 2 for location of gaskets and tapes on spoiler.


1. Remove spoiler as follows:

a. Disconnect and remove stop lamp.

b. Remove rubber stoppers from both sides of trunk lid.

c. Release white clip from trunk lid center support.

d. Remove nuts from underside of trunk lid at both sides, to release spoiler.

2. Turn spoiler upside down.


3. Remove and discard existing rubber gaskets from screws on both sides of spoiler.

4. Remove existing tape from center and both sides of spoiler. Thoroughly clean areas under tape of all adhesive residue. Be sure these areas are clean and dry before applying new tape.

Refer to "Parts Information" section of this Service Bulletin for part numbers of new gaskets and tape.

5. Remove backing from new gaskets and install to screws on both sides of spoiler, with the sticky side facing down (toward spoiler). See Figure 1.

6. Remove backing from new side tapes and install to both sides of spoiler (Figure 1).

7. Remove backing from new center tape and install to center of spoiler (Figure 2).

8. With trunk lid closed, remove adhesive residue from center and sides of top of trunk lid. These areas must be clean and dry before reinstalling spoiler.


9. Reinstall spoiler as follows:

Align spoiler onto trunk lid with screws through openings in lid.

b. Reinstall nuts to both sides of trunk lid, to secure spoiler.

c. Reinstall white clip on spoiler to center of trunk lid.

d. Reconnect and reinstall stop light

e. Reinstall and adjust rubber stoppers to sides of trunk lid.
