AFFECTED VEHICLES
1990-91 Impulse (JI) and Stylus (JS) models equipped with manual transmission before VIN M7417462.
SERVICE INFORMATION
Shifting into first or second gear may become difficult on some affected vehicles. Wear of the rubber stopper at the bottom of the shift selector lever may cause excessive side-to-side lever movement, resulting in difficulty shifting into first or second gear.
To eliminate this condition, this Service Bulletin describes how to adjust the clearance between the shift lever and the shift lever housing, to prevent excessive side-to-side shift lever movement.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Remove the center cluster cover and the floor console as described in the appropriate Workshop Manual.
2. Remove and discard the damaged rubber stopper at the bottom of the shift lever.
3. Place the shift lever in the neutral position.
4. Using a pull scale, pull the lever to the kit with 5 lbs. of force (Figure 1).

5. Adjust the select cable adjusting nuts (Figure 2) in order to obtain 9.5 mm clearance between the bottom of the shift lever and the shift lever housing.
6. Reinstall the floor console and the center cluster cover as described in the appropriate Workshop Manual.
