03C-176 DRIVEABILITY AND EMISSION CONTROLS (DOHC MODEL)

CODE 32

EGR SYSTEM FAILURE

Circuit Description:
The EGR valve is controlled by a solenoid, which in turn is controlled by ECM. This solenoid normally remains off and comes on as the CKT435 is grounded. It comes on only in predetermined-ranges of coolant temperature, MAP, TPS and engine speed. It also comes on when the ignition is on and when, with the engine stopped, the diagnosis terminal has been grounded.

Test Description:
Number(s) below refer to circled number(s) on the diagnostic chart.

1. Checks for the gas temperature sensors 5 volts reference.
2. Looking for a poor or open ground wire.
3. Checks for short to voltage or ground in sensor 5 volts reference circuit.
4. Checking the EGR gas temperatures sensors resistance.
5. A non-functioning EGR valve can cause Code 32 to set.

Diagnostic Aids:

A poor connection or slewed EGR gas temperature sensor could cause a Code 32 to set.
