Idle Speed/Throttle Actuator - Electronic: Service and Repair

IAC Valve:

CAUTION: Before installing a new IAC valve, measure the distance that the valve is extended from the motor housing to the end of the pintle. It should be no greater than 28 mm (1.15 in). If the pintle is extended too far, valve damage may occur on installation. Because different IAC valve pintle designs have been utilized, be sure to install a new valve of the correct design.

When the IAC valve has been replaced, idle adjustment is required as follows:

1. Set parking brake, block wheels and place gear selector in neutral.
2. If the vehicle is equipped with power steering, face the wheels straight ahead.
3. All electrical equipment, including A/C, should be "OFF."
4. Ground ALDL connector with jumper wire (refer to ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTICS).
5. Start engine and run under these conditions to reset pintle position:
a. throttle opening 10% or more
b. engine speed 2000 rpm or more
6. When the engine has reached normal operating temperature, check and adjust timing as needed.
7. Adjust idle speed screw to 950 rpm.
8. Remove ALDL jumper wire and clear trouble codes.
