IMPULSE (JR) TURBO DIFFERENTIAL PINION ADJUSTMENT (WORKSHOP MANUAL CORRECTION)
VEHICLES AFFECTED
1985 and 1986 Impulse (JR) turbocharged models.
SERVICE INFORMATION
The procedure shown in the appropriate workshop manual for selecting a differential pinion depth adjustment shim is correct. However, the shim selection
chart does not indicate the correct adjustment shims for these models.
The entire shim selection procedure is reproduced in this Service Bulletin, along with a new shim selection chart. Please mark all of your copies of the appropriate workshop manuals to indicate that the shim selection chart can be found in Service Bulletin SB86-07-001.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
Drive Pinion:
3. Pinion depth adjusting ; shim
Adjustment of drive pinion mounting distance. (1) Apply gear oil to the drive pinion bearing, inner and outer. Clean all of the pinion setting gage sets. Then install the gage set together with the inner and outer bearings.
(1) Pilot : J-21777-42
(2) Stud and nut : J-23597-9
(3) Gage plate : J-23597-7
Tighten the nut to the specified torque. kg-cm (ft.lbs.)
New bearing 23 (166)
Used bearing 11.0 (80)
INSTALL A DIAL INDICATOR:
v(2) Clean the side bearing bores. Install a dial indicator with discs and arbor. Then install and tighten the bearing caps vto the specified torque.
v Torque kg-m(ft.lbs.) 10.0 (72.3)
(1) Dial indicator : J-8001
(2) Disc (2 pcs.) : J-23597-8
(3) Arbor : J-23597-1
(4) Gage plate : J-23597-7
DIAL INDICATOR:
(3) Set the dial indicator to "0". Place it on the mounting post of the gauging arbor with the contact button touching the indicator pad. Force the dial indicator downward until the needle has made a half turn clockwise. Tighten down the dial indicator in this position. Now move the gauging arbor slowly back and forth and locate the position at which the dial indicator shows the greatest deflection. At this point once again set the dial indicator to "0". Repeat the procedure to verify the "0" setting.
ROTATE THE GAGING ARBOR:
v(4) After the ZERO setting is obtained, rotate the gaging arbor until the dial indicator rod does not touch the gaging plate. Record the number the dial indicator needle points to.
PINION DEPTH CODE:
v(5) Record the pinion depth code on the head of the drive pinion.
(a) The number indicates a necessary. change in the pinion mounting distance. A plus number indicates the need for a greater mounting distance (which can be achieved by decreasing the shim thickness). A minus number indicates the need for a smaller mounting distance (which can be achieved by increasing the shim thickness). If examination reveals pinion depth code "0", the pinion is "nominal".
(b) Use the chart below to determine the proper shim variation to compensate for plus or minus markings.
