Transmission Speed Sensor: Service and Repair

Revolution Sensor Components (2WD Models Only)

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Components - VQ35DE models:

Components - VK45DE models:

Removal
1. Disconnect the battery cable from the negative terminal.
2. Drain ATF through drain plug.
3. Remove exhaust front tube and center muffler with power tool.
4. Remove rear propeller shaft.
5. Remove control rod.

6. Remove oil pan and oil pan gasket.

7. Check foreign materials in oil pan to help determine causes of malfunction. If the ATF is very dark, smells burned, or contains foreign particles, the frictional material (clutches, band) may need replacement. A tacky film that will not wipe clean indicates varnish build up. Varnish can cause valves, servo, and clutches to stick and can inhibit pump pressure.
^ If frictional material is detected, perform A/T fluid cooler cleaning. Refer to "A/T Fluid Cooler Cleaning". A/T Fluid Cooler Cleaning
8. Support A/T assembly with a transmission jack.

CAUTION: When setting transmission jack, place wooden blocks to prevent from damaging control valve with TCM and A/T case.

9. Remove rear engine mounting member with power tool.
10. Remove rear extension assembly (VQ35DE models) or output shaft & companion flange complement (VK45DE models) according to the following procedures.
a. VQ35DE models

i. Remove tightening bolts for rear extension assembly and A/T case.

ii. Tap rear extension assembly with a soft hammer.

iii. Remove rear extension assembly from A/T case. (With needle bearing.)

b. VK45DE models
i. Remove tightening bolts (1) for output shaft & companion flange complement and A/T case.
<-: Bolt (10)
^ Self-sealing bolts (2)

ii. Tap output shaft & companion flange complement with a soft hammer.

iii. Remove output shaft & companion flange complement from A/T case

11. Disconnect revolution sensor connector.

CAUTION: Be careful not to damage connector

12. Straighten terminal clips to free revolution sensor harness.

13. Remove revolution sensor from A/T case.

CAUTION:
^ Do not subject it to impact by dropping or hitting it.
^ Do not disassemble.
^ Do not allow metal filings, etc., to get on the sensor's front edge magnetic area.
^ Do not place in an area affected by magnetism.

Installation

CAUTION: After completing installation, check A/T fluid leakage, A/T fluid level and A/T position.

1. Install revolution sensor in A/T case. Tighten a necessary bolt for revolution sensor with specified torque.

CAUTION:
^ Do not subject it to impact by dropping or hitting it.
^ Do not disassemble.
^ Do not allow metal filings, etc., to get on the sensor's front edge magnetic area.
^ Do not place in an area affected by magnetism.

2. Connect revolution sensor connector.

3. Securely fasten revolution sensor harness with clips.
4. Install rear extension assembly (VQ35DE models) or output shaft & companion flange complement (VK45DE models) according to the following procedures.
a. VQ35DE models

i. Apply recommended sealant (Genuine Anaerobic Liquid Gasket or equivalent.

CAUTION: Completely remove all moisture, oil and old sealant, etc. from A/T case and rear extension assembly mounting surfaces.

ii. Install rear extension assembly to A/T case. (With needle bearing.)

CAUTION: Insert the tip of parking rod between the parking pole and the parking actuator support when assembling the rear extension assembly.

iii. Tighten rear extension assembly bolts to the specified torque.

CAUTION: Do not reuse self-sealing bolts.

b. VK45DE models
i. Apply recommended sealant (Genuine Anaerobic Liquid Gasket or equivalent.

CAUTION: Completely remove all moisture, oil and old sealant, etc. from the A/T case and output shaft & companion flange complement mounting surfaces.

ii. Install output shaft & companion flange complement to A/T case.

iii. Tighten output shaft & companion flange complement bolts (1) to the specified torque.
<-: Bolt (10)

CAUTION: Do not reuse self-sealing bolts (2).

5. Install rear engine mounting member.
6. Install oil pan to A/T case.
a. Install oil pan gasket to oil pan.

CAUTION:
^ Do not reuse oil pan gasket.
^ Install it in the direction to align hole positions.
^ Complete remove all moisture, oil and old gasket, etc. from oil pan gasket mounting surface.

b. Install oil pan (with oil pan gasket) to A/T case.

CAUTION:
^ Install it so that drain plug comes to the position as shown in the figure.
^ Be careful not to pinch harnesses.
^ Completely remove all moisture, oil and old gasket, etc. from oil pan mounting surface.

c. Tighten oil pan mounting bolts to the specified torque in numerical order shown in the figure after temporarily tightening them. Tighten necessary oil pan mounting bolts with specified torque.

CAUTION: Do not reuse oil pan mounting bolts.

7. Install drain plug to oil pan. Tighten a necessary drain plug with specified torque.

CAUTION: Do not reuse drain plug gasket.

8. Install control rod.
9. Install rear propeller shaft.
10. Install exhaust front tube and center muffler.
11. Pour ATF into A/T assembly.
12. Connect the battery cable to the negative terminal.
