2006 M35; PING TYPE NOISE FROM EXHAUST SYSTEM AFTER ENGINE IS

There is a ping type noise from the exhaust system after the engine is turned off.
ACTION
Loosen clamps A, B, and C to remove and replace the upper and lower front exhaust heat shields and insulator clamp D.

The purpose of ACTIONS (above) is to give you a quick idea of the work you will be performing. You MUST closely follow the entire Service Procedure as it contains information that is essential to successfully completing this repair.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Loosen Y-tube insulator (heat shield) clamp "A".
Do not remove bolt.
2. Loosen Y-tube insulator clamp B bolt. Same as step 1. Do not remove bolt.
3. Remove clamp "C" bolt completely. However do not remove clamp "C".
4. Remove clamp "D" bolt.
5. Remove and discard clamp "D" keep the bolt. (See Figure 5)
6. Remove the lower and upper exhaust front heat shields. Discard the removed parts. (See Figure 6)
7. Install the upper front heat shields (first) with the mesh end pointing to the rear of the vehicle. (See Figure 7)
8. Make sure the new front tube heat shield is tucked under the Y-Tube heat insulator as shown in Figure 8.
9. Install the lower front heat shield (second).
10. Install and tighten new clamp D using bolt form Step 5.
11. Tighten clamp A B and C bolts.
12. Drive the vehicle and allow the vehicle to cool. Confirm the ping type noise is no longer present.
