SERVICE INFORMATION
This bulletin introduces features of the new Infiniti Vehicle Immobiliser System-Nissan Anti-Theft System (IVIS-NATS) and advises that the IVIS uses the NATS-E980U CONSULT program card (J38486-98PP5).
This system is standard equipment on all 1999 I30 vehicles. The IVIS will not allow the engine to start without the use of a registered ignition key.
The immobiliser function of the IVIS consists of the following (see Figure 1):
1. NATS ignition key.
2. NATS antenna amplifier, located under the ignition key cylinder.
3. NATS immobiliser control unit (IMMU), located behind the driver side instrument lower cover.
4. Engine Control Module (ECM), located under the console, below the instrument panel.
5. Security Indicator (Light Emitting Diode, or LED), located on the left side of the dash.
The Immobiliser system key points are:
A. System Description:
^ The IVIS uses a digital radio frequency (RF) transmitted between an ID chip (which is embedded in the ignition key) and the IMMU. When the correct RF is received, the ECM will allow the engine to start.
^ If the correct RF is not received, the ECM will not allow the engine to start.
^ IVIS does not activate the vehicle theft warning system.
^ Each vehicle is supplied with two registered keys and one wallet key, which operates only the door locks (the engine cannot be started with the wallet key).
NOTE:
The wallet key should only be used to open the vehicle door. It does not contain an ID chip and will not be recognized by the immobiliser system. If it is used to try to start the vehicle five or more times, the immobiliser system will activate (see RESET PROCEDURE).
^ A maximum of five keys can be registered to the IVIS.
^ If any key needs to be re-registered, all other keys must be re-registered at the same time.
B. NATS-E980U CONSULT Program Card:
^ The NATS-E980U CONSULT program card (Tool # J38486-98PPS) was shipped to each Infiniti dealer during August, 1998.
^ The NATS-E980U CONSULT program card must be loaded into CONSULT and initialized. The card must remain in CONSULT while servicing and diagnosing the IVIS or registering keys.
^ The NATS-E980U CONSULT program card erases other software installed in CONSULT (i.e. UE990 software). Therefore, after using the NATS-E980U CONSULT program card, the UE990 program card must be reloaded and initialized to diagnose other systems.
C. Key Registration General Information:
^ IVIS uses a 10 position key.
^ The CONSULT term for key registration is "initialization."
