Ignition Timing: Testing and Inspection
IGNITION TIMING INSPECTION
- Warm up engine to normal operating temperature.
- Turn engine OFF.
- Disconnect throttle position sensor connector.
- Connect a suitable timing light, see methods A & B below.
- Start engine and let it idle.
- Check ignition timing with transmission in Neutral.
Specification: 15° ±2° BTDC
- If not as specified, adjust timing by loosening the camshaft position sensor bolts, and rotating the camshaft position sensor.
- Turn engine OFF, and remove all test equipment.
- Reconnect throttle position sensor connector.
Timing Light Hook-Up
Any of the following two methods may be used.
Method A
1. Attach timing light to loop wire as shown.
2. Check ignition timing.
Method B
1. Remove intake air duct.
2. Remove No. 1 ignition coil.
3. Connect No. 1 ignition coil and No. 1 spark plug with suitable high-tension wire as shown, and attach timing light clamp to this wire.
4. Install air duct.
5. Check ignition timing.
