1994-1995 G20 A/T CONTROL UNIT COUNTERMEASURE FOR MIL "ON", DTC P0734 INCIDENT

APPLIED VEHICLE:
1994-1995 G20 (P10)

SERVICE INFORMATION

Utilize this service procedure if a 1994 or 1995 G20 customer complains of an intermittent MIL light "On" incident. CONSULT SELF-DIAGNOSIS RESULTS and FREEZE FRAME DATA identifies DTC P0734 Apr 4th SIGNAL OR TCC stored in engine and Apr control unit memories, as shown below. This incident may not be caused by an electrical failure or the Apr circuits being open or shorted.

The ECM and Apr control units store DTC P0734 in control unit memory under the following conditions:

^ A delayed engagement into 4th gear position (D4) occurs while the vehicle is being driven.

^ The vehicle is being driven and the torque converter clutch doesn't "lock-up" at the appropriate time according to Apr control unit logic. A delay going into torque converter lock-up of more than 10 seconds will set this code.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Verify engine performance does not affect A/T operation.

2. Verify the A/T operates correctly and the shift pattern is correct according to the service manual (TROUBLE DIAGNOSES, Preliminary Check, page AT-25).

3. If engine performance and A/T shift patterns are correct, install a countermeasure Aft control unit. The torque converter lock-up engagement diagnostic logic has been revised in the countermeasure control unit.

NOTE:
The countermeasure control unit is effective only in resolving DTC P0734 caused by the diagnostic logic conflicting with normal valve body operations. DTC P0734 will still occur if the transmission is unable to shift to 4th gear position (D4). Refer to the service manual for further diagnostics.
