J30 PASSENGER AIR BAG LID PART NUMBERS AND SERVICE PROCEDURE

SERVICE INFORMATION:
Some J30 owners may complain of distortion or damage that affects only the passenger-SRS air bag lid (cover). A separate service part is now available for the passenger side SRS air bag cover. In addition, a service procedure for removal and installation of the passenger side air bag cover is also described below. The bulletin, new service parts, and service procedure should eliminate dash replacement for passenger side air bag cover-related incidents.
SERVICE PROCEDURE:
This Technical Bulletin describes the procedure for replacing the passenger side air bag cover, which is now available as a single replacement part.
FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAG LID
NOTE:
Use Tool # J38219 Torx Bit for removal and installation of special hardware.
REMOVAL - Front Passenger Air Bag Lid
1. Remove bolts securing lower instrument cover on passenger side.
2. Remove bolts securing glove box assembly.
3. Remove front passenger air bag module.
4. Remove four nuts securing front passenger air bag lid.
INSTALLATION - Front Passenger Air Bag Lid Reverse the removal procedure sequence while observing the following points:
^ To install front passenger air bag lid, position air bag lid reinforcement and nut (located close to the centerline of the vehicle) on inner side of instrument panel, then, temporarily tighten with the stud bolt (Figure A). Snugly tighten the remaining nuts. Next, align air bag lid pawls and, then, tighten all nuts securely.
^ To install passenger air bag module, properly fasten and tighten with new "special" bolts.
WARNING:
If the air bag has deployed, the front instrument panel assembly should be replaced.
