J3O ROOF NOISE
APPLIED MODEL:
1993 Infiniti J30
SERVICE INFORMATION
On some J30 vehicles, a slight creaking noise may be heard from the roof rail/sunroof area near the left "B" pillar when driving over bumps or driveways. The noise may also be described as "a rattle or creak from the sunroof" when driving in or out of driveways.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
Open the sunroof and inspect the left and right roof reinforcement rails inside the sunroof opening for insufficient clearance between the roof panel and rail edge.
There should be 0.5-1.0 mm of clearance between the reinforcement rail and roof panel. If there is insufficient clearance, insert a wide, flat bladed screwdriver tip between the reinforcing rail and the roof panel. Twist the screwdriver in either direction to bend the reinforcing panel down slightly until there is a gap of 0.5 - 1.0 mm between the reinforcing rail and the roof panel.
If necessary, lower the headliner trim and carefully push the headliner toward the rear of the vehicle to allow access for inspection and adjustment of the reinforcement rail. Easy access can be accomplished by entering the rear seat area and accessing the roof reinforcement rail through the large sunroof opening in the lowered headliner.
Reinstall the headliner and recheck the vehicle for noise.
