Engine Teardown
Fig. 20 Engine Outer Components:
Fig. 21 Main Bearing Cap Loosening Sequence:
1. Remove engine outer components, Fig. 20.
2. Place engine on suitable work stand.
3. Remove timing belt as previously described.
4. Drain coolant and engine oil.
5. Remove oil pan as previously described.
6. Remove cylinder heads.
7. Remove pistons.
8. Remove bearing caps and crankshaft loosening attaching bolts in sequence, Fig. 21.
PISTON, ROD & CRANKSHAFT
1. Remove timing chain, refer to TIMING CHAIN.
2. Remove baffle plate.
3. Remove pistons with connecting rod. When disassembling piston and connecting rod, remove snap ring first, then heat piston to 140-158°F or use piston pin press at room temperature.
4. Measure crankshaft endplay. Endplay should be .0039-.0102 inch.
5. Loosen bolts in two or three steps and remove bearing beam, bearing cap and crankshaft.
CYLINDER HEAD
1. Remove hydraulic lash adjuster noting the following:
a. If hydraulic lash adjuster is kept on its side, there is a risk of air entering it. After removal, always set hydraulic lash adjuster straight up, or when laying in on it side, have it soak in new motor oil.
b. Do not disassemble hydraulic lash adjuster.
c. Attach identifying tags to valve lifters.
2. Using suitable tool, remove valve components parts.
