AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT PROCEDURE
APPLIED MODELS:
1990-92 Q45 1990-92 M30
SERVICE INFORMATION:
In the event that a vehicle equipped with an "Air Bag" Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) is damaged to the point that the vehicle must be crushed or destroyed, or if the air bag module is to be discarded, the air bag must be deployed beforehand. This Bulletin gives a procedure by which the deployment should be performed.
CAUTION:
The air bag module is explosive and can be dangerous. Keep your hands and face away from the steering wheel while you work. Make sure no other persons are in your work area. Follow other precautions given in this Bulletin.
Tools Required:
A. Special T50 Anti-Tamper "Torx" bit, 3/8 drive, J-38219.
B. Nissan Air Bag Deployment Tool, J-38381.
SERVICE PROCEDURE:
1. Place vehicle outdoors in such a way that it is surrounded on all sides by at least 20 feet of open space.
2. Use a volt meter to make sure the vehicle battery is fully charged. Caution: the battery must show voltage of 9.6V or more. Disconnect the battery cables. Remove the battery from the vehicle and place it on dry wood blocks approximately 15 feet away from the vehicle left front door.
NOTE:
Should the vehicle battery be unusable, remove it from the vehicle and borrow a fully charged battery from another vehicle.
3. Wait 10 to 12 minutes after the vehicle battery is disconnected before proceeding.
4. Connect the air bag Deployment Tool to the battery.
Caution:
Make sure the polarity is correct. The right side lamp in the tool, marked "DEPLOYMENT TOOL POWER" should glow with a green light. If the right side lamp glows red, reverse the connections to the battery.
5. Press the deployment tool switch to the "ON" position. The left side lamp in the tool, marked "AIR BAG CONNECTOR VOLTAGE" should illuminate. If it does not illuminate, replace the tool. If it does illuminate, disconnect the Deployment Tool from the battery and proceed to step 6.

6. Remove the lower lid from the steering wheel and disconnect the air bag module connector.
7. Connect the deployment tool to the air bag module.
Caution:
Make sure the deployment tool is disconnected from the battery before you make this connection.
8. Carefully uncoil the deployment tool wire outside the vehicle to its full length. Close the windows and doors of the vehicle if possible.
Caution:
Make sure the vehicle door does not pinch the wires of the deployment tool.
9. Connect the terminals of the deployment tool to the positive and negative terminals of the 12 volt battery. The lamp on the right side of the tool, marked "DEPLOYMENT TOOL POWER" should glow green, not red.
Caution:
Make sure no one is in the vehicle. Make sure the space around the vehicle is clear. Do not allow any person within 20 feet of the vehicle's left or right doors.
10. Press the button on the deployment tool. The left side lamp on the tool, marked "AIR BAG CONNECTOR VOLTAGE," will illuminate and the air bag will deploy.
NOTE:
The gas and white dust created when the air bag is deployed is not poisonous. However, be careful not to allow anyone to inhale either the gas or the dust. These can irritate the throat and cause choking.
11. Disconnect the deployment tool from the battery.
Warning:
The metal portion of the inflator module will be hot for a period of time. Do not touch these parts of the module until they cool down.
12. Disconnect the deployment tool connector from the air bag module.
13. Remove steering wheel side lids. Use special "torx" bit to remove the air bag module from the steering wheel. Place it into a sealed vinyl bag for disposal. Do not attempt to disassemble the air bag module. It cannot be re-used.
Caution:
^ Never apply water to a deployed air bag module.
^ Be sure to wear gloves when handling a deployed air bag module.
WARRANTY INFORMATION:
Note:
Operations/Repairs performed as a result of vehicle damage are not warrantable.
