II. Install Rear Rail Prox. Switch, Bracket & Upstop
INSTALL THE COUNTERMEASURE REAR RAIL PROXIMITY SWITCH, BRACKET, and UPSTOPNOTE:
The following upstop adjustment procedures are extremely important and must be precisely followed to prevent "header slap" or uneven auger pin engagement.
1. Install the countermeasure upstop jam nut on the countermeasure upstop. Install the jam nut, finger-tight only, up to the top of the upstop.
2. Position the countermeasure proximity switch bracket to the convertible top mechanism and install the countermeasure upstop. Bottom out the upstop on the proximity switch bracket (Figure 6).
3. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
4. Using the "TOP UP" switch, raise the convertible top and secure it to the windshield header.
5. Rotate the upstop counter-clockwise until the bumper contacts the rear rail.
6. Using the "TOP DOWN" switch, lower the convertible top halfway.
7. Turn the ignition switch to the "OFF" position.
8. Rotate the upstop one (1/2) revolution counter-clockwise.
9. Tighten jam nut (Torque: finger-tighten, then [1/4] turn).
10. Install two (2) drops of Loctite # 242 onto the threads of the upstop, at the jam nut.
11. Install one (1) lower plastic jam nut and one (1) lockwasher on the countermeasure proximity switch.
12. Attach wire or string to the countermeasure proximity switch and, as a safety measure, tie the other end to a convenient place on the convertible top stack mechanism.
13. Route the proximity switch wire harness through the convertible top stack mechanism; then, position the rear rail proximity switch on the bracket.
NOTE:
On some late production N3O Convertibles, the proximity switch harness is additionally-secured with a plastic retention clip (Figure 7). It is fastened with a screw which must be re-attached using a # 2 Phillips head screw driver.
14. Install one (1) lower plastic jam nut and one (1) lockwasher; temporarily, finger-tighten.
15. Remove the wire or string and discard.
16. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
17. Using the "TOP DOWN" switch, lower the convertible top.
18. Turn the ignition switch to the "OFF" position.
19. Carefully reach down between the quarter trim panel and the top mechanism and re-connect the blue plug connector for the proximity switch harness. (see Figure 2).
20. Carefully lift the quarter trim panel onto the body and align holes for re-installation.
21. Install the two (2) screws - with inset snaps - to secure the top of the quarter trim panel.
22. Install the seat belt upper anchor bolt (Torque: 42 Nm; 29 ft-lbs).
23. Re-attach the windlace to the lock pillar (at the B-Pillar) pinch weld flange (see Figure 1).
24. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
25. Using the "TOP UP" switch, slowly raise the top to the windshield header, but, DO NOT SECURE.
NOTE:
Make sure that the proximity switch does not contact the magnetic actuator in the rear rail (Figure 8). Otherwise, damage to the proximity switch and bracket may result.
26. Continue pressing the "TOP UP" switch to secure the top to the windshield header.
27. Turn the ignition switch to the "OFF" position.
28. Adjust the proximity switch so that the clearance between the proximity switch and the magnetic actuator in the rear rail is 3/16" (5 mm). (Figure 9)
NOTE:
Make sure that the proximity switch is aligned and centered with respect to the magnetic actuator in the rear rail.
29. Tighten the proximity switch (plastic) jam nut to 5 - 8 inch/lbs.
NOTE:
DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN THE JAM NUT. Overtightening the jam nut will cause immediate proximity switch failure.
30. Repeat the removal and installation procedures for the rear rail proximity bracket/switch assembly on the other side.
