SERVICE INFORMATION:
Some owners of 1991 G20 vehicles may complain of difficulty when engaging reverse gear. Although the shift lever seems to be in reverse, when the clutch is engaged, a grinding noise is heard and the shift lever moves toward neutral; but, remains in the reverse gate. Depressing the clutch and pulling the shift lever, again, usually moves the lever a short distance to engage reverse.
Infiniti has developed an improved reverse idler gear set to reduce reverse gear blocking. The normal frequency of reverse gear blocking is once or twice per 10 attempts to engage reverse. If the customer experiences more frequent blocking incidents, install the C/M Gear Set and explain to the customer that the frequency will be reduced to a normal level, not eliminated.
SERVICE PROCEDURE:
IMPORTANT:
Before disassembling the main shaft, confirm that the necessary Special Tools are available in your shop: Puller 5th Main Gear (Kent-Moore P/N.J25681); Puller 3, 4, 5 Sync (P/N J22912-01); Drift 5th Main Gear (J25863-01).
1. Remove the transaxle assembly from the vehicle.
2. Continue with the Disassembly procedure, found on Page MT-14 of the 1991 Infiniti G20 Service Manual.
3. Disassemble the transmission, removing the shift forks and rods, input shaft, mainshaft assembly; while, simultaneously, measuring the clearances specified in the Service Manual.
4. Remove the reverse idler gear, but, do not remove the shaft from the clutch housing because the fitting will be loose.
5. Replace the reverse idler gear and reverse main gear, as a set, with the improved parts.
6. Replace any damaged parts; reinstall all components in the reverse order of removal.
7. Re-install the case and case cover using Loctite Anaerobic Liquid Gasket (Loctite P/N 51813).
NOTE:
To our knowledge, at this time, there is not a functional equivalent compound to this Loctite product.
