G20 A/T CHIRP NOISE ON 2-3 SHIFT
APPLIED MODEL: 1991 G20 (P10)
SERVICE INFORMATION:
Some owners of 1991 G20 vehicles may complain about a chirp noise during shifts. The noise is usually audible on 2-3 up-shifts at less than one half throttle.
If this noise occurs, Infiniti has developed a countermeasure input shaft and high clutch assembly with improved clutch material and less free play.
SERVICE PROCEDURE:
1. Remove the transaxle from the vehicle. Refer to the service procedures indicated in the
1991 G20 Service Manual beginning at page AT-28.
DISASSEMBLY: Ref: page AT-44
2. Remove the torque converter and the input shaft o-ring.
3. Set the transaxle with input shaft pointing upward and remove converter housing to case bolts. Remove converter housing and then the final drive.
Important: Locate and remove the o-ring from the differential oil port.
4. Remove the oil pump, note the plastic thrust washer location and bearing race which determine the clutch end play and total end play.
5. Loosen brake band anchor and remove band.
6. Lift out the input shaft, reverse clutch, and high clutch as an assembly. Then separate the clutches.
7. Install the C/M input shaft (without seal rings) and high clutch assembly with the original bearing race.
8. Install the oil pump assembly with two bolts to measure the total end play.
9. Measure the total end play of the input shaft by positioning a dial indicator on the end of the shaft and lifting the shaft to measure the travel.
10. Select the proper thickness of bearing race (refer to table below) so that end play is within specifications (refer to table below).
See the G20 Service Manual page AT-135 for the alternative procedure and illustrations.

ASSEMBLY:
11. Carefully install the three (3) seal rings and needle thrust bearings on the new input shaft.
12. Install input shaft, reverse clutch, and high clutch as an assembly.
Note: Be careful to avoid damage to the seal rings on the shaft and pump.
13. Install the brake band.
14. Install the oil pump.
15. Install the input shaft o-ring.
16. Adjust brake band.
17. Install final drive into position.
18. Place differential oil port o-ring into position on transmission case.
19. Assemble torque converter housing to the transmission case, using Loctite sealant # 518 or equivalent on the mating surface of converter housing on the inboard side of the bolts as shown on page AT-141 of the 1991 G20 Service Manual.
20. Install torque converter with care to avoid damage to the input shaft o-ring.
