ANAEROBIC LIQUID GASKET FOR THE RL4FO3A (V) TRANSAXLES

APPLIED MODELS:
1991-92 G20 (P10)

APPLIED TRANSAXLES:
RL4FO3A (V)

SERVICE INFORMATION:

Beginning with the automatic transaxle utilized on the 1991-92 G20(P10), the Factory has been using a liquid, anaerobic (cures in the absence of air) gasket compound, Loctite P/N 51813, rather than composite gaskets. This liquid compound is being used to seal:

1. The torque converter housing to transmission case.
2. The side cover to transmission case, as appropriate.

NOTE:
In the 1991-92 G20 Service Manuals, the Factory has used incorrect terminology, refering to this compound as "Locking Sealant." Future Service

Manuals will utilize the correct terminology, "Liquid Gasket."

LIQUID GASKET INFORMATION:

Loctite P/N 51813 is available in a 50 ml tube, through your local warehouse distributor. If you have any questions concerning product availability, call: 1-800-321-9188. Loctite's anaerobic liquid gasket is a methacrylate ester liquid resin that cures in the absence of oxygen (air) and presence of metal to form a solid polymethacrylate. To our knowledge, there is no other equivalent, commercially-available, liquid gasket which meets all of the Factory's sealing requirements for the automatic transaxles in the above vehicles.

APPLICATION INFORMATION:

Application information will be found in the Automatic Transmission (AT) section of the G20 Service Manual. However, as mentioned in this Bulletin, the Factory has used incorrect terminology, refering to the compound as "Locking Sealant." The correct terminology is "Liquid Gasket"

In general, it is necessary to use one (1) tube (50 ml are in each tube) of the abovereferenced Loctite product to re-seal the two (2) areas of the automatic transaxle.

The following guidelines should be carefully followed to achieve a successful repair:

1. Remove dirt, grease, and oil. Use a non-petroleum based solvent, such as, Permatex Brake and Parts Cleaner, P/N 123DA, or equivalent [a non-chlorinated Brake and Parts Cleaner is also available as Permatex P/N 82220, or equivalent], to remove these contaminants.

2. Clean and dry all parts.

3. Inspect sealing surfaces; to re-create a leak-free seal, it is extremely important to verify that surfaces are free from nicks or gouges. If necessary, replace transmission cover component. These components may not be machined.

4. Apply a continuous bead of Loctite P/N 51813 to one surface. Do not break the bead. See the illustration (Figure 1) for sealing bead dimensions.

NOTE:
If the bolt hole is machined through the case, it will be necessary to apply an additional bead of Anaerobic Liquid Gasket completely around the hole.

5. Assemble parts. Parts can be returned to service in 1 hour.

WARRANTY INFORMATION:

The following "local" part number has been established to reimburse dealerships for the cost of this special material:

"LOCALLIGKT"

Use this "local" P/N for all claims involving applicable repairs to the RL4FO3A (V) transaxles, as outlined in this TSB.
