G20 ENGINE STOPS RUNNING WHEN COLD

SERVICE INFORMATION


Use the following procedures if a customer states that a 1991-92 G20 stops running when coming to a first stop when cold. The customer may also state that restarting the engine is very difficult and that the engine cranks as if there is no compression.

First, verify engine oil level and correct viscosity, 5W-30. On automatic transmission models, check the transmission fluid level. If a vibration is felt on A/T models prior to the engine stopping, verify proper operation of the lock-up clutch. Confirm the correct operation of engine systems as shown in the Service Manual diagnostic procedure for Engine Stalls When Cold (page EF&EC-164 of the 1992 Service Manuals). If everything checks OK, follow the procedure.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Check and adjust the ignition timing with a timing light (see page EF&EC-59). Confirm that the pointer is not bent. Also check the crank angle sensor (see page EF&EC-104).

2. Remove the valve cover and inspect for cam wear and oil delivery. Refer to TSB EM92-001 for details.

3. Check and adjust valve timing as an assistant slowly turns the engine through TDC. The cylinder which is on the intake stroke will open the intake valves at 13~ BTDC and close the exhaust valves at 3~ ATDC. Refer to the Service Data Section, page EM-62.



4. If incident is not corrected in steps 1-3, replace the HLA's (hydraulic lash adjusters). Improved hydraulic lash adjusters have been in production on the G20 since September 23, 1991 beginning with engine # SR20-223296. Use the Service Manual instructions to replace the HLA's with the improved parts listed in the Parts Information section of this bulletin.
