Service Procedure

Step A

1. With the vehicle parked in a shaded area, gently apply # 1119 to affected areas of the vehicle, keeping it wet for 4-5 minutes. To avoid scratching the finish, do not rub with the mitt -- just gently move the solution around. Do not allow the solution to dry before rinsing.

Important:
Do not exceed the 5 minute soak time as this may damage paint or trim.

2. Rinse, then dry the contaminated surfaces with the terry cloth towels to remove the majority of the water. Use gentle pressure on the towel to avoid scratching the paint with any loosened iron pariicles.

3. Apply # 883 (rust remover) directly from the bottle using the applicator provided. Keep the affected areas wet for 5 minutes and allow the solution to lift the particles. Agitate gently, but do not rub as this will scratch the clear coat. Reapply # 883 to spots which may dry before rinsing.

4. Rinse thoroughly with a pressure wash of tap water within 5 minutes.

5. Reapply # 883 as often as needed to remove more difficult spots.

6. Wash with # 118SC (neutralizer and shampoo) by hand and rinse thoroughly. Gently dry with a fresh towel. Towels used in the above steps may have iron particles in the nap and could scratch the clear coat.

Step B

If after the above chemical process you find that some particles have penetrated the clear coat, the surface must be refinished. Refer to the Warranty Paint and Body SelfStudy Course, the Infiniti Flat Rate Manual or the Infinifi Warranty Policy and Procedures Manual for assistance.

Important:
All of the particles must be removed and the surface neutralized with the above procedure before applying the new clear coat. Iron particles and acids which remain will wick moisture through the new clear coat and cause blistering.

Water and Chemical Spot Repair

Use a 2'x 2' test section to determine how much abrasive cutting is needed to remove the spots. Follow the flow chart applying each operation several times as necessary.

A buffing repair procedure (using Meguiar's materials) for the fluorine clear coat on the Q45, M30 and now the J30 was published in November, 1989. The following procedure is basically the same with the addition of 3M materials. The G20 may be repaired with either product line.

IMPORTANT:
Use of a wool pad on fluorine clear coat (Q45, M30 and J30) is still not recommended. Use of the 3M buffing materials is acceptable for the G20.

3M Materials:

Towels -- 100% cotton terry cloth to dry vehicle and wipe off residues. 3M sanding and buffing materials are available at your local automotive paint and body supply.

*# 5996 is dark in color to ease clean-up on dark cars, while # 5995 Perfect-it (white) is also available for light colors.

Meguiar's Materials:

Towels -- 100% cotton terry cloth to dry vehicle and wipe off residues.

Meguiar's sanding and buffing materials are available at local automotive paint and body supply.

Polishing:

Clean the surface of all buffing compound and any wool fibers before polishing.

Apply a small amount of polishing compound over the work area (2' x 2' or less) with a clean foam pad before turning the buffer "ON".

Highly skilled personnel may buff with an 8" rotary buffer and foam pad at 1750 RPM to remove swirl marks.

Less skilled operators should polish with an orbital machine and foam pad at 1750 RPM, keeping the pad nearly flat and moving it slowly but continuously over the repair area. Clean pad frequently.

Inspection -- Gently clean a small section of the surface with Prep-sol (or similar wax remover) using a clean towel (wipe in one direction) to remove any polish/filler. Inspect the surface for swirl marks under full sunlight or a with a halogen 500 watt work lamp held at an angle about an arm's length away to determine if swirl marks or spots remain. Polish again if necessary. When all marks are removed, the vehicle can be released for sale.

Buffing:

Clean and dry the surface before buffing.

Apply a small amount of buffing compound and spread it over the work area (2'x 2'or less) with the buffing pad before turning the buffer "ON".

3M materials require highly skilled personnel to buff with an 8" rotary buffer and the lambs wool pad at 1750 RPM on the G20 model only. Do not use a lamb's wool pad on Q45, M30 or J30 models.

Meguiar's materials may he used by less skilled operators using an orbital buffer with foam pad at 1750 RPM. Meguiar's materials may be used on all Infiniti models. Keep the pad flat and move it slowly but continuously over the repair area. Clean pad frequently.

Sanding:

1. Soak the sand paper in water for at least 15 minutes before use. Mask the fenders and doors to reduce cleanup time.

2. Sand with 2000 grit paper on a sanding pad. Apply plenty of water while sanding in one direction 12-15 strokes. Do not sand in a circular pattern. Avoid sanding near body lines and panel edges.

3. Rinse the surface with water and cross-sand with 2000 grit paper 12-15 strokes.
Cross sanding is helpful to see your progress, but may not be practical on contoured surfaces.

4. Rinse with water and squeegee gently. As the squeegee clears the water, look for pits which remain. Cross-sand again with 2000 grit paper where necessary. Repeat up to 5 times.

5. Inspect the surface each time you squeegee. If the pits are too deep, the surface must be refinished. Refer to the Warranty Paint and Body Self-Study Course, the Infiniti Flat Rate Manual or the Infiniti Warranty Policy and Procedures Manual.

6. If the majority of the pits were removed and the remainder are few and small, buff and polish the repair area as previously described to remove sand scratches.
