REAR SUSPENSION "CLUNK" NOISE

APPLIED MODEL: 1990 M30 (F31)
1991 M30 (F31) Coupe & Convertible,
until March 13, 1991 Oppama Production

SERVICE INFORMATION:

Some customers may notice a light "clunking" noise from the rear of the vehicle when accelerating from a stop, or on a bumpy road surface at speeds below 5 mph.

Such a noise can be created by changes in the shock absorber dampening forces. A countermeasure Sonar Suspension control unit has been developed to eliminate the "clunking" noise in vehicles experiencing the symptom. The countermeasure unit was applied in production from March 13, 1991.

NOTE: Before installation of a control unit, physically inspect suspension components to be sure there are no worn suspension parts. Perform a function check of the Sonar Suspension system using the self-diagnosis procedure starting, as described, on page FA-29 of the 1991 Service Manual.
