Engine Teardown

1. Remove engine outer components, Fig. 17.
2. Place engine on suitable workstand.
3. Drain coolant and engine oil.
4. Remove oil pan as previously described and the oil pump.
5. Remove timing belt as previously described.
6. Remove water pump, refer to WATER PUMP.
7. Remove cylinder heads as previously described.
8. Remove pistons.
9. Remove bearing caps and crankshaft loosening attaching bolts in sequence, Fig. 18.

PISTON & ROD ASSEMBLY

1. Using ring remover, remove piston rings.
2. Using suitable tool, drive out pin.

CYLINDER HEAD

1. Remove exhaust manifolds, loosen attaching bolts in sequence, Fig. 19.
2. Remove rocker shafts with rocker arms, loosening bolts in two or three stages.
3. Remove hydraulic valve lifters and lifer guide, noting the following:
a. Hold hydraulic valve lifters with wire so that they do not drop from lifter guide.
b. Measure camshaft endplay. Endplay should be .0012-.0024 inch.
c. Remove oil seal and camshaft.
d. Using valve spring compressor tool No. J33986, remove valve components parts and seal.
