M30 CONVERTIBLE NO. 4 BOW - STAY PADS/TACK STRIP SLIDING CONDITION
APPLIED MODEL:
All M30 Convertibles
SERVICE INFORMATION:
M30 Convertibles brought in for service exhibiting header-slam or malfunctioning top operating systems should be checked, initially, for No. 4 bow tack strips that may have slid down, causing the stay pads to lose tension.
A loose tack strip should be pushed back into place (from inside the vehicle, only); a hole drilled and a retaining screw installed. This operation should be performed on both tack strips, even if only one tack strip is loose.
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Raise and secure the top stack to the windshield header.
2. Reach in between the headliner and the top cover and determine if a No. 4 bow tack strip has slid down. The end of the plastic tack strip should be flush with the end of the No. 4 bow. Repeat for the other side.
^ If the tack strips are in place, the problem is not related to loose tack strips. See the M30 Convertible Service Manual Supplement and the "Product Improvement Summary," ITB 93-009 for other diagnostic procedures.
^ If one or both tack strips have slid down, see Step 3, below.
NOTE:
Do not try to evaluate the position of the tack strip through the top cover, from outside the vehicle. This will not provide an accurate determination and may soil or damage the cover.
CAUTION:
Do not attempt to push the tack strip into place from outside the vehicle via the top cover or damage will result.
3. Remove seven (7) screws to remove the # 4 bow headliner retainer.
4. Remove the screw attaching the headliner strap to the rear drain trough.
5. Remove the screw attaching the headliner strap to the wheelhouse.
6. Remove the screw attaching the headliner strap to the main pivot bracket.
7. Using a blunt tool and hand-pressure, push the tack strip back into place, flush with the end of the No. 4 bow. (Figure 1)
NOTE:
If possible, allow the vehicle to stand in direct sun light, as the tack Strip is more flexible and will move easier when it is warmed. HOWEVER, DO NOT USE A HEAT GUN OR SIMILAR HEAT SOURCE.
WARNING:
Use care when working around the exposed tack strips; the stay pad attaching staples may be protruding from the tack strip and could cause personal injury.
CAUTION:
Do not attempt to push the tack strip into place from outside the vehicle - via the top cover, or damage will result to the top cover.
8. On the forward-facing side of the No. 4 bow, measure and mark 4" - 5" (102 - 127 mm) in from the end of the bow, and down 1/4" (6.4 mm) from the top edge of the bow (Figure 2).
9. Using an Automatic Center Punch (Snap-On YA805A or equivalent), make a dimple mark to drill a hole.
CAUTION:
Use of an Automatic Center Punch is recommended, as the operation will tend to slip off the bow; exercise care. If a standard center punch and hammer are used, use extreme care so that the top cover or the back lite is not punctured or damaged.
10. Protect the vehicle interior with a cover to protect it from drill shavings.
11. Using a 1/8" bit, drill through the forward edge of the bow and through the tack strip. DO NOT DRILL through the other side.
CAUTION:
Exercise extreme care when drilling, as the bit may tend to "walk" or slip off the bow.
12. Remove the protective cover and vacuum shavings. Make sure no shavings are caught between the No. 4 bow and the top cover.
13. Install the M4.2-1.41 x 11.0 round head washer screw (P/N K1716-9X011) into the No.4 bow and tack strip.
14. Install the headliner strap with the attaching screw to the main pivot bracket.
15. Install the headliner strap with the attaching screw to the wheelhouse.
16. Install the headliner strap with the attaching screw to the rear drain trough.
17. Repeat Steps 4 - 16 for the other side.
18. Install the # 4 bow headliner retainer. If the headliner has come loose from the retainer, follow procedure on pages 12-4 and 12-5 of the M30 Convertible Service Manual Supplement, to reinstall.
