SIDE DOOR DOUBLE CLUNK NOISE

APPLIED MODEL: 1990 M30(F31)

APPLIED VIN: JNKHF14C (-) LT007386

APPLIED DATE: June 1, 1990

SERVICE INFORMATION:
On some 1990 M30's, customers may complain of a double-clunk or rattle noise when shutting either the right or left side doors. Starting with the Applied VIN, additional weatherstrips have been added to the side doors to help reduce this double-clunk noise. These weatherstrips are now available as service parts for customer and dealer stock vehicles.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Using the supplied templates, mark the location where the six (6) holes are to be drilled on the inner door panels (see Attachments 1 and 2).

2. Drill (6) 5.2 mm (0.2 in.) holes in both the left and right door panels (Figure 1).

3. Remove the inside door finisher and spray Nissan Rust Preventative, P/N 999MP-A6000, or equivalent, inside the door at the rear - where the metal filings have dropped from the holes which were drilled. Re-install the door finisher.

4. Clean the door panel area where the holes were drilled with solvent. Apply a small amount of butyl sealer at each hole for rust prevention.

5. Remove covering from double-sided tape on weatherstrip; then, insert attaching clips into the holes.

NOTE: The weatherstrip with brown clips, P/N 80832-F6600, is for the right side door; the weatherstrip with white clips, P/N 80833-F6600, is for the left side door.

6. Open and close both doors to check if the double-clunk noise has been reduced to an acceptable level. If not, continue to Step 7.

7. For "objectionable" doors, check door-to-quarter panel fit: door should be flush to 1 mm inboard of the quarter panel. If not, adjust the door striker to meet this dimension. Before adjusting, mark the original position of the striker - for reference - using a pencil or pen. If necessary, refer to the 1990 M-30 Service Manual, BF-13. Again, check if the double-clunk noise is reduced to an acceptable level. If not, continue to Step 8.

8. Check adjustment of the side door glass. Refer to the 1990 M30 Service Manual, BF-13, for dimensions and diagram. side door glass should lightly contact the weatherstrip retainer such that a gap of 0-3 mm is established (Note: the door glass weatherstrip must be removed to check this dimension).

Adjustment of the side door glass can be achieved by moving the door glass regulator.
