Lower Control Arm Replacement

Special Tools
* J 43631 Ball Joint Remover
* J 45851 Ball Joint Separator Protector Adaptors

Removal Procedure

1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Service and Repair).
2. Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair).
3. Remove the stabilizer shaft links from the lower control arm. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement (Front Suspension).
4. Remove the wheel drive shaft. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement (Service and Repair).
5. Remove the shock absorber lower nut and the bolt. Refer to Shock Absorber Replacement (Shock Absorber Replacement).
6. Remove the torsion bars. Refer to Torsion Bar and Support Assembly Replacement (Bushing Style) (Service and Repair).
7. Remove the lower ball joint stud nut. Discard the nut.





Note: DO NOT re-use the lower ball joint nut. Discard the nut and replace with NEW.

8. Using the J 43631 (1) and the J 45851 , remove the lower ball joint stud from the steering knuckle.




9. Remove the lower control arm nuts and the washers.
10. Remove the lower control arm bolts. Discard the bolts.

Installation Procedure

1. Install the lower control arm.




2. Install NEW lower control arm bolts.




3. Install the washers with the shoulder facing the arm.

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).

4. Install the lower control arm retaining nuts.

Tighten the nuts to 215 Nm (160 lb ft).

5. Install the lower ball joint stud to the steering knuckle.
6. Install the NEW lower ball joint nut.

Tighten the nut to 50 Nm (37 lb ft) plus 120°.

7. If unable to use a torque angle meter, perform the following.

* After torquing the lower ball joint nut to the specifications, mark a reference point on the nut and the steering knuckle.
* Rotate the lower ball joint two flats of the nut. This will equal the additional 120°.

8. Install the torsion bars. Refer to Torsion Bar and Support Assembly Replacement (Bushing Style) (Service and Repair).
9. Install the shock absorber lower nut and bolt. Refer to Shock Absorber Replacement (Shock Absorber Replacement).
10. Install the wheel drive shaft. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement (Service and Repair).
11. Install the stabilizer shaft links to the lower control arm. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement (Front Suspension).
12. Install the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair).
13. Lower the vehicle.
14. Verify the wheel alignment. Refer to Wheel Alignment Specifications (Wheel Alignment Specifications).
