Automatic Transmission Removal
Special Tools Required
- Engine Support Hanger, A and Reds AAR-T1256
- 2008 V6 Attachment Arm SIL02C000033
- Engine Hanger Balance Bar VSB02C000019
- Subframe Adapter VSB02C000016
*: Available through the Honda Tool and Equipment Program 888-424-6857.
NOTE:
- Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
- Special tool Reds engine support hanger AAR-T1256 must be used with the side engine mount installed.
1. Raise the vehicle on a lift, and make sure it is securely supported.
2. Remove the front wheels.
3. Remove the engine undercover Engine Undercover Replacement.
4. Remove the drain plug (A), and drain the automatic transmission fluid (ATF).
5. Reinstall the drain plug with a new sealing washer (B).
6. Pry the passenger's side hood support strut clip, and release the passenger's side hood support strut from the pivot bolt Service and Repair.
7. While an assistant supports the hood, and remove the bolts (A) securing the driver's side hood support strut mounting bracket (B). Rotate the bracket over and reattach them to the hood wide-open position threaded hole (C) with the bolt in center hole (D) of the bracket.
NOTE: Do not attempt to close the hood with the hood support strut in the wide-open position; as it will damage the hood support strut and the hood.
8. Do the battery removal procedure Removal and Replacement.
9. Remove the front grille cover Front Grille Cover Replacement.
10. Remove the air cleaner Service and Repair and the intake air duct Removal and Replacement.
11. Remove the bolt securing the PCM bracket, then disconnect PCM connectors A, B, and C.
12. Remove the mounting bolts (A), and loosen the mounting bolts (B), then remove the harness clamp (C) and the battery base (D).
13. Remove the nuts (A) securing the strut brace (B).
14. Remove the brake booster vacuum hose (C) from the strut brace, then remove the strut brace.
15. Remove the positive starter cable (A), and disconnect the S terminal connector (B) from the starter.
16. Remove the harness clamp (C) from the upper radiator hose bracket (D), and remove the bracket.
17. Remove the transmission ground cable (E).
18. Remove the ATF dipstick (F).
19. Remove the starter (A) with the harness clamp bracket (B) and the gasket (C) from the transmission.
20. Insert the dipstick back into the dipstick guide tube.
21. Remove the spring clip (A) and the control pin (B), then separate the shift cable end (C) from the selector control lever (D).
22. Remove the nuts securing the shift cable bracket (E).
23. Check the bushing (F) in the shift cable end for proper fit and wear. If the bushing is loose or worn, replace the shift cable Service and Repair.
24. Disconnect these connectors:
- A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve A connector (A)
- A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve B connector (B)
- 4th clutch transmission fluid pressure switch connector (C)
- Shift solenoid wire harness connector (D)
25. Remove the bolt securing the harness cover (E), and remove the harness cover from its bracket (F).
26. Disconnect these connectors:
- Transmission range switch connector (A)
- Input shaft (mainshaft) speed sensor connector (B)
27. Remove the harness clamp (A) from its bracket.
28. Disconnect these connectors:
- Output shaft (countershaft) speed sensor connector (B)
- Transmission fluid pressure switch B (3rd clutch) connector (C)
- ATF temperature sensor connector (D)
29. Remove the harness clamp (A) from its bracket (B), then remove the bolt (C) securing the harness clamp bracket.
30. Disconnect the A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve C connector (D).
31. Remove the harness cover mounting bolt (E), and remove the harness cover (F) from its bracket (G).
32. Remove the bolt securing the harness clamp bracket.
33. Disconnect the transmission fluid pressure switch A (2nd clutch) connector.
34. Disconnect the ATF cooler hoses (A) from the ATF cooler lines (B). Turn the ends of the cooler hoses up to prevent ATF from flowing out, then plug the cooler hoses and lines.
35. Check for any signs of leakage at the hose joints.
36. 4WD: Remove the transfer breather hose from its clamp.
37. Drain the power steering fluid Testing and Inspection.
38. Remove the steering joint in the following procedure.
NOTE: Apply vinyl tape to the spline of the steering gearbox pinion shaft after removed.
1. Remove the steering joint cover.
2. Disconnect the steering joint.
3. Center the steering wheel spokes using a commercially available steering wheel holder tool.
4. If equipped, remove the center guide.
39. Remove the bolts (A) securing the power steering pump outlet hose and the hose bracket.
40. Disconnect the PSP switch connector.
41. Remove the bolt (A) securing the connector bracket (B) from the front cylinder head; use the bracket bolt hole (C) to attach the engine hanger balance bar front arm.
42. Remove the bolt (A) securing the harness clamp bracket (B) from the rear cylinder head; use the bracket bolt hole (C) to attach the 2008V6 attachment arm.
43. Install the engine hanger balance bar (VSB02C000019). Attach the front arm (A) to the front cylinder head with several spacers (B) and a 10 x 1.25 mm bolt (C). Remove the rear arm from the engine hanger balance bar, then install the 2008 V6 attachment arm (SIL02C000033). Attach the 2008 V6 attachment arm to the rear cylinder head with a spacer (D) and an 8 x 1.25 mm bolt (E).
44. Install the engine support hanger (AAR-T1256) onto the vehicle as shown, and attach the hook to the slotted hole in the engine hanger balance bar. Tighten the wing nut (F) by hand, and lift and support the engine.
NOTE:
- Be careful when working around the windshield.
- Be careful not to damage the hood opener cable when installing the engine support hanger at the front bulkhead.
- The engine support hanger two sets required for stacking additional cross section bars.
45. Remove the front engine mount stop (A), then remove the bolt (B) securing the front engine mount.
46. Remove the rear engine mount stop (A), then remove the bolt (B) securing the rear engine mount.
47. Remove the upper transmission mount assembly.
NOTE: Do not remove the TORX bolt (A) from the upper transmission mount assembly. If the TORX bolt is removed, the upper transmission mount must be replaced as an assembly.
48. Remove the upper transmission housing mounting bolts.
49. Remove the cotter pin (A) and the nut (B) from the tie-rod end ball joint (C) on both sides.
50. Separate the tie-rod end ball joint from the knuckle on both sides Ball Joint Removal.
51. Remove the cotter pin (A) and the castle nut (B) from the knuckle ball joint (C) on both sides.
52. Remove the damper fork mounting nut (D) while holding the mounting bolt (E). Remove the mounting bolt, then separate the knuckle ball joint from the lower arm on both sides Ball Joint Removal.
53. Remove the self-locking nuts (B).
54. Remove exhaust pipe A and the gaskets (C).
55. 4WD: Disconnect the transfer breather hose (A) from the breather pipe (B) on the transfer assembly.
56. 4WD: Make a reference mark (A) across the No. 1 propeller shaft (B) and the transfer companion flange (C), then remove the bolts (D). Separate the No. 1 propeller shaft from the transfer companion flange.
57. 4WD: Remove the transfer assembly (A) and the dowel pin (B) from the transmission.
58. Disconnect the power steering fluid hose (A) from the power steering fluid line (B) Turn the end of the hose up to prevent power steering fluid from flowing out, then plug the hose and line.
59. Disconnect the ATF cooler hose (A) from the ATF cooler line (B). Turn the end of the cooler hose up to prevent ATF from flowing out, then plug the hose and the cooler line.
60. Disconnect the front engine mount actuator harness connector.
61. Disconnect the rear engine mount actuator harness connector.
62. Remove the torque converter cover (A), and remove the eight bolts (B) while rotating the crankshaft pulley.
63. Remove the lower transmission mount nuts.
64. Loosen the front subframe middle rubber mount bolts on both sides.
65. Attach the subframe adapter (VSB02C000016) to the front subframe by looping the strap (A) over the front of the front subframe, then secure the strap with the stop (B), then tighten the wing nut (C).
66. Raise the transmission jack and line up the slots in the arms with the bolt holes on the corner of the jack base, then attach them with the bolts.
67. Remove the four bolts securing the stiffeners (A) and the four bolts securing the front subframe (B), then lower the front subframe.
NOTE: Check that the front subframe is free of the hoses and the electrical wiring.
68. Place the transmission jack under the transmission.
69. Remove the left side driveshaft from the differential and the right side driveshaft from the intermediate shaft. Coat all precision machined surfaces with clean engine oil, then put plastic bags over the driveshaft ends. Support the driveshaft on both sides with nylon straps.
NOTE: Plug the left side driveshaft hole to prevent dirt and solvent from entering transmission.
70. Remove the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor cover (A), and disconnect the CKP sensor connector (B).
71. Remove the bolt (C) securing the harness clamp bracket (D).
72. Remove the rear warm up three way catalytic converter (WU-TWC) bracket (A), and remove the intermediate shaft (B).
NOTE: Plug the intermediate shaft hole (C) to prevent dirt and solvent from entering the transmission.
73. Coat all precision finished surfaces with clean engine oil, then put plastic bags over the intermediate shaft ends.
74. Remove the lower transmission mount.
75. Remove the front engine mount bracket.
76. Check that the transmission is completely free of the hoses and the electrical wiring.
77. Remove the front transmission housing mounting bolt (A) using a socket 22 mm long.
78. Remove the front transmission housing mounting bolt (B).
79. Remove the rear transmission housing mounting bolts.
NOTE: Be careful not to damage the CKP sensor.
80. Remove the lower transmission housing mounting bolts.
81. Check once again that the transmission is free of hoses, and electrical wiring.
82. Slide the transmission away from the engine to remove it from the vehicle.
83. Remove the torque converter (A), the O-ring (B), and the dowel pins (C).
84. Inspect the drive plate, and replace it if it is damaged Service and Repair.
85. Remove the harness cover bracket from the transmission.
