Automatic Transmission Removal
Special Tools Required
- Engine Support Hanger, A and Reds AAR-T1256
- 2008 V6 Attachment Arm SIL02C000033
- Engine Hanger Balance Bar VSB02C000019
- Subframe Adapter VSB02C000016
*: Available through the Honda Tool and Equipment Program 888-424-6857.
NOTE:
- Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
- Special tool Reds engine support hanger AAR-T1256 must be used with the side engine mount installed.
1. Remove the hood support strut bracket (A) on both sides of the hood. Rotate the brackets over and reattach them to the wide-open position (B) with a bolt in center hole (C) of the bracket.
NOTE: Do not attempt to close the hood with the hood support strut in the wide-open; it will damage the hood support strut and the hood.
2. Do the battery removal procedure Removal and Replacement.
3. Remove the splash separator.
4. Remove the front grille cover:
- 2-door Front Grille Cover Replacement (2-Door)
- 4-door Front Grille Cover Replacement (4-Door)
5. Remove the air cleaner housing Service and Repair.
6. Raise the vehicle on a lift, and make sure it is securely supported.
7. Remove the front wheels.
8. Remove the front splash shield Front Splash Shield Replacement.
9. Remove the battery base.
10. Remove the drain plug (A), and drain the automatic transmission fluid (ATF).
11. Reinstall the drain plug with a new sealing washer (B).
12. Remove the strut brace.
13. Remove the positive starter cable (A), and disconnect the S terminal connector (B) from the starter.
14. Remove the harness clamp (C) from its bracket, and remove the upper radiator hose bracket (D).
15. Remove the transmission ground cable (E) and the ATF dipstick (F).
16. Remove the starter and the gasket from the transmission.
17. Insert the dipstick back into the dipstick guide tube.
18. Remove the spring clip (A) and the control pin (B), then separate the shift cable end (C) from the selector control lever (D).
19. Remove the nuts securing the shift cable bracket (E).
20. Check the bushing (F) in the shift cable end for proper fit and wear. If the bushing is loose or worn, replace the shift cable Service and Repair.
21. Disconnect these connectors:
- A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve A connector (A)
- A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve B connector (B)
- 4th clutch transmission fluid pressure switch connector (C)
- Shift solenoid wire harness connector (D)
22. Remove the bolt securing the harness cover (E), and remove the harness cover from its bracket (F).
23. Disconnect these connectors:
- Transmission range switch connector (A)
- Input shaft (mainshaft) speed sensor connector (B)
24. Remove the harness clamp (A) from its bracket.
25. Disconnect these connectors:
- Output shaft (countershaft) speed sensor connector (B)
- Transmission fluid pressure switch B (3rd clutch) connector (C)
- ATF temperature sensor connector (D)
26. Remove the harness clamp (A) from its bracket (B), then remove the bolt (C) securing the harness clamp bracket.
27. Disconnect the A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve C connector (D).
28. Remove the harness cover mounting bolt (E), and remove the harness cover (F) from its bracket (G).
29. Remove the bolt securing the harness clamp bracket.
30. Disconnect the transmission fluid pressure switch A (2nd clutch) connector.
31. Disconnect the ATF cooler hoses (A) from the ATF cooler lines (B). Turn the ends of the cooler hoses up to prevent ATF from flowing out, then plug the hoses and lines.
32. Check for any signs of leakage at the hose joints.
33. Remove the bolt (A) securing the connector bracket (B) from the front cylinder head; use the bracket bolt hole (C) to attach the engine hanger balance bar front arm.
34. Remove the bolt (A) securing the harness clamp bracket (B) from the rear cylinder head; use the bracket bolt hole (C) to attach the 2008 V6 attachment arm.
35. Install the engine hanger balance bar (VSB02C000019). Attach the front arm (A) to the front cylinder head with several spacers (B) and a bolt (10 x 1.25 mm) (C). Attach the 2008 V6 attachment arm (SIL02C000033) to the rear cylinder head and a bolt (8 x 1.25 mm) (D), then attach the rear arm (E) to the 2008 V6 attachment arm.
36. Install the engine support hanger (AAR-T1256) onto the vehicle, and attach the hook to the engine balance bar slot. Tighten the wing nut (F) by hand, and lift and support the engine.
NOTE:
- Be careful when working around the windshield.
- Be careful not to damage the hood opener cable when installing the engine support hanger at the front bulkhead.
- AAR-T1256 two sets required for stacking additional cross section bar.
37. Remove the front engine mount stop (A) and the front engine mount bolt (B).
38. Remove exhaust pipe A.
39. Remove the damper pinch bolt (A), the damper fork bolt (B) and the self-locking nut (C), and remove the damper fork (D) on both sides.
40. Remove the cotter pin (E) and the castle nut (F), and separate the knuckle ball joint (G) from the lower arm (H) on both sides.
41. Release the power steering fluid line (A) from its clamp (B) at the right front of the subframe.
42. Remove the bolts (A) securing the steering gearbox from the passenger's side.
43. Remove the bolt (B) securing the steering gearbox heat shield, and remove the bolt (C) securing the power steering fluid line clamp. Release the return fluid hose (D) from its clamp (E).
44. Disconnect the rear engine mount actuator harness connector (A) at the stiffener plate (B) from the driver's side.
45. Remove the bolts (C) (D) securing the steering gearbox with the stiffener plates.
46. Remove the bolt (E) securing the power steering fluid line clamp.
47. Remove the rear engine mount base bracket bolts: 10 x 1.25 mm (A) (three bolts) and 12 x 1.25 mm (B).
48. Disconnect the front engine mount actuator harness connector at the front subframe.
49. Disconnect the ATF cooler hose (A) from the ATF cooler line (B). Turn the end of the cooler hose up to prevent ATF from flowing out, then plug the hose and the line.
50. Remove the torque converter cover (A), and remove the eight bolts (B) while rotating the crankshaft pulley using a heavy duty socket, 19 mm.
51. Remove the lower transmission mount nuts.
52. Remove the front subframe middle rubber mount on both sides.
53. Set the subframe adapter (VSB02C000016) to the front subframe by looping the strap (A) over the front of the front subframe, then secure the strap with the stop (B), then tighten the wing nut (C).
54. Raise a transmission jack and line up the slots in the arms with the bolt holes on the corner of the jack base, then attach them with the bolts.
55. Support the steering gearbox on both sides with nylon straps.
56. Remove the four bolts securing the stiffeners (A) and the four bolts securing the front subframe (B), and lower the front subframe.
NOTE: Check that the front subframe is free of the ATF cooler hoses and the electrical wiring.
57. Remove the lower transmission mount.
58. Remove the left side driveshaft from the differential and right side driveshaft from the intermediate shaft.
NOTE: Plug the left side driveshaft hole to prevent dirt and solvent from entering transmission.
59. Coat all precision machined surfaces with clean engine oil, then put plastic bags over the driveshaft ends. Support the driveshaft on both side with nylon straps.
60. Remove the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor cover (A), and disconnect the CKP sensor connector (B).
61. Remove the bolt securing the sensor harness clamp bracket (C).
62. Remove the rear warm up three way catalytic converter (WU-TWC) bracket (A), and remove the bolts securing the heat shield (B), then remove the heat shield.
63. Remove the intermediate shaft (C).
NOTE: Plug the intermediate shaft hole (D) to prevent dirt and solvent from entering the transmission.
64. Coat all precision finished surfaces with clean engine oil, then put plastic bags over the intermediate shaft ends.
65. Place a jack under the transmission, raise it just enough to take it off of the upper transmission mount, and remove the upper transmission mount assembly.
NOTE: Do not remove the TORX bolt (A) from the upper transmission mount assembly. If the TORX bolt is removed, the upper transmission mount must be replaced as an assembly.
66. Remove the jack.
67. Remove the upper transmission housing mounting bolts.
68. Lower the transmission by loosening the wing nut on the engine support hanger, and tilt the engine just enough for the transmission to clear the side frame.
69. Place the transmission jack under the transmission.
70. Remove the sensor harness clamp bracket (A) from the front engine mount bracket (B), and remove the front engine mount bracket.
71. Check that the transmission is completely free of the ATF cooler hoses and the electrical wiring.
72. Remove the front transmission housing mounting bolt (A) using a socket 22 mm long.
73. Remove the front transmission housing mounting bolt (B).
74. Remove the rear transmission housing mounting bolts.
NOTE: Be careful not to damage the CKP sensor.
75. Remove the lower transmission housing mounting bolts.
76. Slide the transmission away from the engine to remove it from the vehicle.
77. Remove the torque converter (A) with the O-ring (B) and the dowel pins (C).
78. Inspect the drive plate, and replace it if it is damaged Service and Repair.
79. Remove the harness cover bracket from the transmission.
