Automatic Transmission Installation

Special Tools Required

- Subframe Alignment Pin 070AG-SJAA10S
- 2008 V6 Attachment Arm SIL02C000033
- Engine Support Hanger, A and Reds AAR-T1256
- Engine Hanger Balance Bar VSB02C000019
- Subframe Adapter VSB02C000016
*: Available through the Honda Tool and Equipment Program 888-424-6857.

NOTE: Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.

1. Clean the ATF cooler ATF Cooler Cleaning after removing the transmission, or when you install an overhauled or remanufactured transmission.

2. Install the harness cover bracket.






3. Install a new O-ring (A) on the torque converter (B), then install the torque converter on the mainshaft (C).

NOTE: Make sure the torque converter is fully engaged on the mainshaft, the stator shaft, and the ATF pump drive gear. Failure to do so will result in severe transmission or engine damage.





4. Install the 14 mm dowel pin (D) and the 10 mm dowel pin (E) in the torque converter housing.

5. Install the lower transmission mount with new bolts.





6. Place the transmission on a transmission jack, and raise the transmission to the engine level, then fit the transmission to the engine.

7. Install the lower transmission housing mounting bolts.






8. Install the rear transmission housing mounting bolts.

NOTE: Be careful not to damage the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor.






9. Install the front transmission housing mounting bolt (A) using a socket 22 mm long.





10. Install the front transmission housing mounting bolt (B).

11. Install the front engine mount bracket (A) with new bolts.





12. Install the sensor harness clamp bracket (B) on the front engine mount bracket.

13. Remove the transmission jack.

14. Install the upper transmission housing mounting bolts.






15. Position the upper transmission mount assembly (A), and install new upper transmission mount bolts (B) to the body.





16. Loosely install new upper transmission mount bracket bolts (C) and nut (D) to the transmission housing.

17. Clean the areas where the intermediate shaft is inserted into the transmission (differential) with solvent, and dry with compressed air.

NOTE: Do not wash the rubber parts with solvent.

18. Install a new set ring (A) on the intermediate shaft (B).





19. Check the oil seal (C), and replace it if it is damaged A/T Differential Oil Seal Replacement.

20. Apply ATF to the intermediate shaft splines (D), put the heat shield (E) on the intermediate shaft, then install the intermediate shaft; be sure not to allow dust or other foreign particles to enter the transmission.

NOTE: Insert the intermediate shaft carefully to prevent damaging the oil seal.

21. Install the heat shield with the mounting bolts.

22. Install the rear warm up three way catalytic converter (WU-TWC) bracket (F).

23. Clean the areas where the left driveshaft is inserted into the transmission (differential) with solvent, and dry with compressed air.

NOTE: Do not wash the rubber part with solvent.

24. Install a new set ring (A) on the left driveshaft (B).





25. Check the oil seal (C), and replace it if it is damaged A/T Differential Oil Seal Replacement.

26. Install the left driveshaft; be sure not to allow dust or other foreign particles to enter the transmission. Turn the steering knuckle fully outward, and slide the driveshaft into the differential until you feel its set ring fully engage the side gear.

NOTE: Insert the left driveshaft carefully to prevent damaging the oil seal.

27. Apply the recommended grease to the right driveshaft inboard joint splines.

28. Slide the right driveshaft over the intermediate shaft splines until you feel the driveshaft fully engage the intermediate shaft set ring.

29. Connect the CKP sensor connector (A), and install the CKP sensor cover (B) and the sensor harness clamp bracket (C).






30. Remove the transmission jack.

31. Set the subframe adapter (VSB02C000016) to the front subframe by looping the strap (A) over the front of the front subframe, then secure the strap with the stop (B), then tighten the wing nut (C).





32. Raise the transmission jack and line up the slots in the arms with the bolt holes on the corner of the jack base, then attach them with the bolts.

33. Position the steering gearbox washers (A) on the front subframe (B), and raise the front subframe up to the body, then loosely install new front subframe mounting bolts (C), the front stiffener mounting bolts (D), and new rear stiffener mounting bolts (E).

NOTE: Be careful when connecting these items:

- Engine mounts and its brackets
- Lower transmission mount and front subframe
- Lower arms





34. Secure the front subframe in the following procedure.

1. Loosely tighten the front subframe mounting bolt (A) in the right rear stiffener until the front subframe insulator contacts the body; insert the subframe alignment pin through the positioning slot (B) on the right rear stiffener, through the positioning hole (C) on the front subframe, and into the positioning hole (D) on the body.

2. Loosely tighten the front subframe mounting bolt in the left rear stiffener in the same manner as in step 34-1.

3. Reinsert the subframe alignment pin through the positioning slot on the right rear stiffener, through the positioning hole on the front subframe, and into the positioning hole on the body, then tighten the front subframe mounting bolt to the specified torque.

4. Tighten the front subframe mounting bolt in the left rear stiffener in the same manner as in step 34-3.

5. Tighten the front subframe mounting bolts in the right front stiffener and the left front stiffener to the specified torque.

6. Check that the positioning holes and slots are aligned using the subframe alignment pin.

7. Tighten the rear and front stiffener mounting bolts to the specified torque.





35. Remove the transmission jack and the subframe adapter.

36. Install the front subframe middle rubber mount on both sides.






37. Install the lower transmission mount nuts.






38. Attach the torque converter to the drive plate with the eight bolts (A). Rotate the crankshaft pulley as necessary to tighten the bolts to half of the specified torque, then to the final torque, in a crisscross pattern. After tightening the last bolt, check that the crankshaft rotates freely.





39. Install the torque converter cover (B).

40. Loosely install the rear engine mount base bracket with new bolts: 10 x 1.25 mm (A) (three bolts) and 12 x 1.25 mm (B).






41. Align the bolt holes in the front subframe and the washers (A) with the driver's side of steering gearbox, and secure the steering gearbox with the bolts (B) (C) and the stiffener plates (D).





42. Install the power steering fluid line clamp (E) with the bolt.

43. Connect the rear engine mount actuator harness connector (F).

44. Position the steering gearbox bracket (A) over the passenger's side of the steering gearbox, and Install the steering gearbox with the bolts (B).





45. Install the steering gearbox heat shield (C) and the power steering fluid line bracket (D) with the bolts. Secure the hose (E) at the dot mark (F) in its clamp (G).

46. Secure the power steering fluid line (A) with the clamp (B).






47. Connect the front engine mount actuator harness connector at the front of the subframe.






48. Connect the ATF cooler hose (A) to the ATF cooler line (B), and secure the hose with the clip (C) Service and Repair.






49. Install the damper fork (A) with the damper pinch bolt, and install the knuckle ball joint (B) to the lower arm (C) on both sides.

NOTE: Wipe off any grease contamination from the knuckle ball joint tapered section and threads on both sides.





50. Install new damper fork bolt (D) and new self-locking nut (E) on both sides, and loosely tighten the self-locking nuts.

51. Tighten the castle nut (F) on both sides to the lowest torque specification, then tighten it only far enough to align the slot with the ball joint pin hole. Do not align the castle nut by loosening it.

NOTE: Insert a new cotter pin (G) into the ball joint pin hole from the front to the rear of the vehicle, and bend its end as shown. Check the ball joint pin hole direction before connecting the knuckle ball joint.

52. Install exhaust pipe A with new self-locking nuts and new gaskets (B) Service and Repair.






53. Loosely install a new front engine mount bolt (A), and install the front engine mount stop (B) with new nuts (C).






54. Remove the engine support hanger and the engine hanger balance bar with the 2008 V6 attachment arm.

55. Tighten the front engine mount bolt to 54 Nm (5.5 kg-m, 40 lb-ft).

56. Tighten the rear engine mount base bracket 10 x 1.25 mm bolts (three) and 12 x 1.25 mm bolt to 54 Nm (5.5 kg-m, 40 lb-ft).

57. Tighten the upper transmission mount bracket bolts and nuts to 59 Nm (6.0 kg-m, 43 lb-ft).

58. Install the connector bracket to the front cylinder head.






59. Install the harness clamp bracket to the rear cylinder head.






60. Connect the ATF cooler hoses (A) to the ATF cooler lines (B), and secure the hoses with the clips (C) Service and Repair.






61. Connect the transmission fluid pressure switch A (2nd clutch) connector.






62. Secure the harness clamp bracket with the bolt.






63. Install the harness cover (A) on its bracket (B), and secure it with the harness cover mounting bolt.





64. Connect the A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve C connector (C).

65. Install the harness clamp bracket (D), and install the harness clamp (E) on its bracket.

66. Connect these connectors:

- Transmission fluid pressure switch B (3rd clutch) connector (A)
- Output shaft (countershaft) speed sensor connector (B)
- ATF temperature sensor connector (C)





67. Install the harness clamp (D) on its bracket.

68. Connect these connectors:

- Transmission range switch connector (A)
- Input shaft (mainshaft) speed sensor connector (B)





69. Install the harness cover (A) on its bracket (B), and secure it with the bolt.





70. Connect these connectors:

- A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve A connector (C)
- A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve B connector (D)
- 4th clutch transmission fluid pressure switch connector (E)
- Shift solenoid wire harness connector (F)

71. Apply molybdenum grease to the hole in the bushing (A) in the shift cable end (B), then install the shift cable bracket (C) with the nuts.





72. Attach the shift cable end to the selector control lever (D), then insert the control pin (E) into the selector control lever hole through the shift cable end, and secure the control pin with the spring clip (F).

73. Remove the ATF dipstick, then install the starter (A) and a new gasket (B).






74. Install the upper radiator hose bracket (A), and install the harness clamp (B) on its bracket.





75. Install the positive starter cable (C), and connect the S terminal connector (D).

76. Install the transmission ground terminal (E), and install the water hose (F) in its clamp (G).

77. Insert the dipstick back into the dipstick guide tube.

78. Install the strut brace (A).






79. Refill the transmission with ATF.

80. Place a jack under the lower arm, and raise the front suspension to load it with the vehicle's weight. Do not place the jack against the ball joint pin of the knuckle.
Tighten the damper fork mounting nut while holding the mounting bolt to 64 Nm (6.5 kg-m, 47 lb-ft), and tighten the damper pinch bolts to 49 Nm (5.0 kg-m, 36 lb-ft).

81. Install the battery base.

82. Install the air cleaner housing Service and Repair.

83. Do the battery installation procedure Removal and Replacement.

84. Install the front grille cover:

- 2-door Front Grille Cover Replacement (2-Door)
- 4-door Front Grille Cover Replacement (4-Door)

85. Install the splash separator.

86. Reinstall the hood support strut brackets with the bolts to proper locations on both sides of the hood.





87. Install the front splash shield Front Splash Shield Replacement.

88. Install the front wheels.

89. Set the parking brake. Start the engine, and shift the transmission through all positions three times while pressing the brake pedal. Check the shift lever operation, A/T gear position indicator operation, and shift cable adjustment.

90. Start the engine in P or N, and warm it up to normal operating temperature (the radiator fan comes on).

91. Turn off the engine, and check the ATF level ATF Level Check.

92. Check the front wheel alignment Service and Repair.

93. Do the road test A/T Road Test.
