Safety Recall: Fuel Tank Unit Roll-Over Valve

(Supersedes 11-014, dated March 15, 2011, to revise the information marked by the black bars and asterisks)

*REVISION SUMMARY

^ The BACKGROUND was updated.

^ Under WARRANTY INFORMATION, the description and the failed part number were changed.

^ Under REPAIR PROCEDURE, step 5 was changed.

^ An example of the customer letter was added.*

BACKGROUND

*If the vehicle is involved in a crash where the vehicle rolls over, the fuel pump module includes a roll-over valve (ROV) that prevents fuel from leaking out of a vehicle's fuel tank into the evaporative emissions canister. The plastic case where the ROV is located was improperly ultrasonically welded, and the case may break or crack, causing the ROV to separate or not work properly.*

VEHICLES AFFECTED

Not all vehicles within the affected VIN ranges are affected by this campaign. To verify vehicle eligibility, you must check at least one of these items:

^ The customer has a notification letter.

^ The vehicle is shown as eligible on a VIN status inquiry.

In addition, check for a punch mark below the first character of the engine compartment VIN. A punch mark in that location means this campaign has already been completed.

Some vehicles affected by this campaign may be in your new or used vehicle inventory. As a matter of federal law, these vehicles must be repaired before they are sold.

Should a dealership sell an unrepaired vehicle that subsequently causes an injury or damage because of the recalled item, the dealership will be solely responsible to the damaged party, and will be required to defend and indemnify American Honda for any resulting claims. To see if a vehicle in inventory is affected by this campaign, do a VIN status inquiry before selling it.

CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION

Owners of affected vehicles will receive a notification of this campaign. An example of the customer notification is at the end of this service bulletin.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Inspect the roll-over valve case for damage and, if needed, replace the fuel tank unit.

^ Rear Seat Removal/Installation

^ Fuel Tank Unit Removal/Installation

1. Relieve the fuel pressure.

^ Missing base plate

^ If the roll-over valve case has any of these problems, replace the fuel tank unit, then go to step 6.

^ If the roll-over valve case does not have any of these problems, the roll-over valve is OK. Go to step 6 to reinstall the fuel tank unit.

6. Reinstall the fuel tank unit. Torque the locknut to 120 N.m (88.2 lb.ft).

NOTE:

^ Use a new base gasket, a new locknut, and a new locknut plate.

^ Use a new retainer to reconnect the fuel line only if you replace the fuel tank unit.

^ To prevent a fuel leak, check the base gasket, visually or with your hand, to make sure it is not pinched.

7. Reinstall the rear seat cushion.

8. Center-punch a completion mark below the first character of the engine compartment VIN:
