DTC P0502:

Problem in CVT Speed Sensor Circuit

NOTE:

- Before you troubleshoot, record all freeze data and any on-board snapshot with the HDS, and review General Troubleshooting Information How To Troubleshoot The CVT System.
- This code is caused by an electrical circuit problem and cannot be caused by a mechanical problem in the transmission.

'07-11 Models

1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).

2. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

3. Block the rear wheels, and raise the front of the vehicle. Make sure it is securely supported, and allow the front wheels to rotate freely, or raise the vehicle on a lift.

4. Start the engine. Disable the VSA (if equipped) by pressing the VSA OFF button, and run the vehicle with the shift lever in L, with the engine speed above 4,500 rpm, then release the accelerator without pressing it again, for at least 6 seconds. Slow down, and stop the wheels.

5. Check the Driven Pulley rpm in the A/T Data List with the HDS.

Is the Driven Pulley rpm more than 100 rpm?

YES -

Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals between the PCM and the vehicle speed sensor, then go to step 16.

NO -

Go to step 6.

6. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

7. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor connector.

8. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).

9. Measure the voltage between vehicle speed sensor connector terminal No. 1 and body ground.

Is there about 5 V?

YES -

Go to step 10.

NO -

Go to step 11.

10. Measure the voltage between vehicle speed sensor connector terminals No. 1 and No. 3.

Is there about 5 V?

YES -

Go to step 22.

NO -

Repair an open in the wire between PCM connector terminal B33 and vehicle speed sensor connector terminal No. 3, then go to step 16.

11. Measure the voltage between vehicle speed sensor connector terminals No. 2 and No. 3.

Is there about 5 V?

YES -

Replace the vehicle speed sensor Service and Repair, then go to step 16.

NO -

Go to step 12.

12. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

13. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.

14. Disconnect PCM connector C (44P).

15. Check for continuity between PCM connector terminal C43 and body ground.

Is there continuity?

YES -

Repair a short to body ground in the wire between PCM connector terminal C43 and vehicle speed sensor connector terminal No. 2, then go to step 16.

NO -

Repair an open in the wire between PCM connector terminal C43 and vehicle speed sensor connector terminal No. 2, then go to step 16.

16. Reconnect all connectors.

17. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).

18. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

19. Start the engine. Disable the VSA (if equipped) by pressing the VSA OFF button, and run the vehicle with the shift lever in D, and keep the vehicle at speeds over 25 mph (40 km/h) while monitoring the Driven Pulley rpm in the A/T Data List with the HDS, then release the accelerator without pressing it again, for at least 7 seconds. Slow down, and stop the wheels.

20. Check for Pending or Confirmed DTCs with the HDS.

Is DTC P0502 indicated?

YES -

Check for poor connections or loose terminals between the vehicle speed sensor and the PCM, then go to step 1.

NO -

Go to step 21.

21. Monitor the OBD STATUS for P0502 in the DTCs MENU with the HDS.

Does the HDS indicate PASSED?

YES -

Troubleshooting is complete. If any other Pending or Confirmed DTCs were indicated in step 20, go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting.

NO -

If the HDS indicates FAILED, check for poor connections or loose terminals between the vehicle speed sensor and the PCM, then go to step 1. If the HDS indicates NOT COMPLETED, go to step 19.

22. Reconnect all connectors.

23. Update the PCM if it does not have the latest software PCM Update, or substitute a known-good PCM Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview.

25. Check for vehicle DTCs with the HDS.

Is DTC P0502 indicated?

YES -

Check for poor connections or loose terminals between the vehicle speed sensor and the PCM. If the PCM was updated, substitute a known-good PCM Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview, then go to step 24. If the PCM was substituted, go to step 1.

NO -

Go to step 26.

26. Monitor the OBD STATUS for P0502 in the DTCs MENU with the HDS.

Does the HDS indicate PASSED?

YES -

If the PCM was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If the PCM was substituted, replace the original PCM Service and Repair. If any other Pending or Confirmed DTCs were indicated in step 25, go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting.

NO -

If the HDS indicates FAILED, check for poor connections or loose terminals between the vehicle speed sensor and the PCM. If the PCM was updated, substitute a known-good PCM Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview, then go to step 24. If the PCM was substituted, go to step 1. If the HDS indicates NOT COMPLETED, go to step 24.
